Auto decks and speakers

My question is why do the decks say 50W x 4? does that mean that the deck puts out 50W to each speaker or will put out 200W to each speaker?

That's a 200W total output, which in a four-speaker system means 50W to each speaker. Keep in mind that this is a peak output, not a continuous power output. When you shop for amps or head units, pay more attention to the RMS rating (most of the better brands will give you both). This is the amount of power the unit puts out continuously. The peak power rating is how much it can put out in a burst. Similarly for speakers, buy based on the RMS rating more than the peak rating - you want to know how much power you can safely pump into the speakers continuously - the RMS rating will give that to you.

By definition, RMS value would be (peak rating) x(.707) but for ease of use, look at a peak value and figure on an RMS (continuous) rating of about half that - it allows you to err on the side of caution.

For what it's worth, 25W continuous to each speaker may not seem like much, but a lot of factory stereo systems put 15W or less to each speaker. 25W by comparison is a significant step up.

Can you use any speakers or does it have to be same brand bought at goodwill put speakers on it lights up but i have no sound from either cd or tape deck

You can use any speakers as long as they are not lower than the rated ohms unit of the unit. For example if it says 8 ohms, you can't connect any speakers with a number lower than that. However you can connect speakers with a number higher than 8 ohms.
The wattage is also important, but not as critical. For example if the amp is rated 20w a channel you can connect any speaker than that or the same as that. It is possible to go lower with wattage. For example a 50w amp could have 30w speakers connected. However you must NEVER take the volume to even near the highest level or you will destroy the speakers and probably damage the amp.

I have a 2004 honda accord ex v6 i was trying to put new speakers in after i put the first 2 in the speakers worked for 5 mins then all 4 stopped working and the deck still appears to be fine all week...

Most lightly problem would be a loose/faulty connection in the speaker wiring.

You have apparently eliminated the deck as two decks are unlightly to present with the same problem.

All contacts/joints should be either new/good condition, purpose made clips or the connections should be soldered.

There may be an earthing of a speaker wire - maybe pinched and the insulation damaged when installing - this could be intermittant for the same reason as a bad connection, that is with the vibrations and bumps when driving, the connection opens or the damaged wire shorts to earth.

Check all connection points and test for earth leakage with a multi meter. You may need to do this a few times as the problem is intermittant.

In modern cars electronic faults can be very difficult to trace and further damage can easily be done if you are not careful.

Hope this helps :)

Will this dual 50w x 4 apple ipod ready in dash cd deck fitin a 2000 4 door Mercury Grand Marquie

yes, but you will need an adapter. There are several companies that make these. You can see a couple of examples here:
You can buy these adapter kits at stores that sell the decks. I recommend you also buy the wiring harness, including an antenna adapter. Let me know if you have more questions.

I have a Kenwood KDC-MP442U Deck and protect will not come off

check speakers for a short protect means one of the speakers are shorting so check all the connections on speakers or if you have a multimeter put the black to ground and put it on contanuity and check from the plug at the unit and it will beep if one is shorting then you know which one to check instead of pulling your whole car apart:)

Where is best location to mount speakers besides trunk and trunk deck & doors?

Kick Panals are good, boxes are expensive though as they must be custom fit. Dashboard mounts, prolly only for componant speakers not subs. But if you wanna add speakers, you can always put more in the doors, trunk, or trunk deck to. Or replace your factory trunk deck, or door panals, and customize them to fit as many speakers as you like, have fun with it..

Put in new front speaker in car and they worked good for a couple of hours, now there is no sound from the front or back speakers. I unhooked the front speakers and put one back then rear speakers worked...

Hello. Sounds like the amplifier is damaged and or could be a short from a front speaker wire to the car chassie ground. Assuming that the four speakers are driven by the same deck. I would first varify that the amplifier in the deck (radio, CD, etc) is functioning properly if it is being used.
