Kenmore Side by Side Refigerator. Freezer drain is blocking up and ice is building up in the bottom of the freezer section. We have thawed everything three times until we hear the water draining from the drain but problem returns immediately.

You can install a drain heater, available at http://aplusapplianceparts.com/searchquick-submit.sc?keywords=279827 to prevent it from freezing. It simply wraps around and secures to the defrost heater assembly to prevent freezing. Use coupon code 1050 for a discount on your order!

Sometimes the drain can clog with ice. If this is it - simple fix. Empty the freezer and find the drain. Put hot water in the drain with a turkey baster or try using a hair dryer to thaw the ice and let the water drain. A small amount of water drainage through this drain is normal. The water sits in a tray underneath and evaporates helped by heat from the compressor. If the drain plugs, the water will build up in the bottom of the freezer and become an ice block.

Daewoo side by side freezer leaking even though water turned off also icing up at bottom of freezer

Probably a blocked drain outlet or pipe. At the bottom rear of the unit, mine had a drain pipe blocked with a plug of mould (5/6 years old machine), apparently quite common. I detached the pipe and cleaned it out and replaced it.
From inside the freezer, I removed the lower back panel and thawed the ice build up on the drainage tray below the defrost heating element, leading to the pipe outside. The puddles of water that was appearing every defrost cycle have now stopped - permanently I hope. Hope this helps you

The freezer is fine but the lower fridge is at 58 f

There is ice build up blocking air flow to the refridgerator compartment. Put everything in a cooler, turn fridgfe off, thaw OVERNIGHT with BOTH DOORS PROPED OPEN and then rinse freezer with a liter(big slam) of water. Let sit 5 minutes and pull bottom drain pan . Empty it. IF YOU RUSH THIS THEN The internal ventalation will still be blocked. 12 hour thaw minimum even with doors open.

Ice build-up in bottom of freezer section.

your defrost drain on the freezer side is stopped up causing the drain to freeze over then eventually running out on the floor during the defrost cycle. Locate the drain at the back of the freezer and thaw it out using hot water. Using a screw driver or other object gently push down into the defrost hole and dislodge whatever is stuck there.

An air hose with good air pressure may also work well. When the drain line is clear you should be able to pour water through it freely.

Whirlpool Side by Side Freezer - Ice Build Up in Drain

After the drain thaws , ( I use about a 4 inch aluminum fence tie or if need longer , aluminum wire with no insulation ,) insert it into the drain hole as far as it will go with no force , and wrap the top end about 1 turn around the calrod defrost heater , This transfers heat to the hole so the ice will not freeze up the hole . Before doing this step , use a hose and blow into the drain to possible clear out any debris which could have accumulated in the drain trap .
