SOURCE: Cant find IP address
You need to make sure that DHCP is turned on for the router and the the Xbox is set to automaticallly get network settings. If not, then you will need to manually configure the adress and settings. If this is the case, please post back the address of the router and all other devices on your network and we can help you make a suitable choice and get it configured.

A switch will allow you to see multiple computers and use multiple connections at any one time.
It will also allow you to PING other computers connected to that switch.
Ensure it a powered swictch and that the power is ON.
Double check that you do not have any IP conflicts and that both computers are in the same domain or workgroup.
Also check that the subnet is the same
My home network consists of xboxes, media centres, servers, laptops, other computers so I can confirm my information to you as correct.

Could be a few different problems. One is your internet connection speed. If its below 5Ms I would say you are blowing out your bandwidth and it your ISP can't keep up, thus causing a slow connection or even some time-outs. If you are at or above 5M, check what ports you have your connections in. Some hubs are set specifically to take the ISP in a certain port and have it looped through another port. I'd start there.

I would recommend downloading the latest firmware for this device and then se if your "crashing" goes away.
If you plug directly into the cox modem do you have problems?
If that doesn't work I would replace the Cat 5e network cable from the switch to the cox modem.
If that doesn't work replace the coax cable from the cox modem.
If you continue to have issues replace the switch.
