Compressor not doing much

We have a carrier 38brc060 and the outside compressor isn't doing much. The fan inside does notspin. We hear like it it trying to do something but it is not. Is this something that we can do on our own?

Hi. I have 38brc060 outdoor and air handler, today the compressor gave out according to the technician and I need to replace it. How much is a compressor for my carrier system? Its a 2 ton unit that was installed in 2000. I am also trying to figure out if there is a warranty for this...

Thanks in advance...

I am assuming that you are talking about a central ac unit. On a central air unit the outside fan must be running whenever the compressor is. If it's not the compressor will shut off from overheating withing minutes. First you need to shut off the unit for several hours and let it cool completely down. Then turn it on briefly to see if the compressor starts and see if the fan tries to start.( I am assuming the compressor starts and runs.) If the fan won't start try testing the capacitors. There are usually two one for the fan one for the compressor. Sometimes there will be one combo one. Mark the wires and remove the capacitor. Get it tested and if bad replace it. This will probably do the job. If not test for current at the fan motor. Also test to see if it turns freely. The motor may need to be replaced. This will run about $50. The capacitor should always be replaced when the motor is changed anyway.

Indoor fan contactor pulls in but both compressor and condenser fan contactors wont pull in ?

You either have a problem with the wiring/fuses/ breakers/worn contactor. If someone goes inside and sets the stat to cooling you outside should hear a click and maybe a small hum. If this is what you find the power feeding the condensor is tripped or fuses are blown.

Ac unit clicks outside but nothing engages fan or compressor on unit furnace still runs for heat setting and fan still blows but ac will not engage just hear a clicking was running for three days this...

Have you check the outside breaker? If its ok then you got a problem in your electrical system inside the unit probably the contactor is not engaging this is where the 24 volts from the thermostat calls for the 240 volts to run the condenser fan and compressor. Be careful checking this out because of the high voltage.

Compressor fan and compressor not running new 2 yr old system puron

No power to outside unit. Check to see if contactor on outside unit is pulled in. Most AC units inside have float switch. When the drain stops up it shuts off outside unit. Located in overflow or underneath unit. No Problem Rusty

I have a carrier infinity system. On the thermostat it reads "sens error" where the outdoor temp is normally displayed. The inside unit is running but the outside unit is not. Any suggestions?

A burned or pitted contactor will/can cause a unit to not run. Outside fan. Just thinking out loud. Start with low voltage check at t.stat then check outside low volt. Set t.stat to on. If fan engages at least your transformer is good. Next set calling for cool. Drop t.stat 68-70. If nothing happens go outside and with a screwdriver depress the contactor in. If fan and compressor kicks in change the contactor. If contactor is pulled in check outside fan. Remove the wires from the compressor and see if the fan will run . If it does you have eliminated start components as good. The compressor has to be check. It needs to be ohmed out. Turn off power at disconnect. Pull the cover on the compressor. Check between pins; then pins to ground. Open or infinite is good.Have you checked fuses. Like small 3-5 amp fuses
