Question about Dell Computers & Internet

2 Answers

I have a Dell Inspiron PP39L running Windows 7. I also have a Viewsonic Monitor VX2250WM-LED which I set up as an external monitor. It's all working perfectly the way I want it as per the Display panel. (i.e. Nothing on the laptop screen, and all my work on the LED.) However...the minute I shut the lid of the laptop, everything closes down, including the external monitor. When I raise the lid, then all of the settings revert back to the laptop. Under Power Options, I've got it set to 'do nothing' when lid is closed, but that doesn't seem to help. Can you help me?

Thank you for these suggestions. I've tried these too. My problem is that I cannot close the lid of the laptop without having then to reconfigure the screens once I open it again. The key with the two screens allows me to do that, but I'd like to be able to work with the screen shut altogether. Any further suggestions? I've got the lid directions all set to 'do nothing' so I would have thought that I could close it and still have the monitor and external keyboard running. I can't believe that's asking too much.

Thank you for trying to help me.

Nothing is stupid when it comes to computers, but yes, I've applied and then given he final okay when I moved on as appropriate. I was hoping it was as simple as that too! It seems to be the nature of the beast to not run while it's lid is shut. I'm wondering something else. I've got the sleep buttons also set to 'do nothing' just in case that helped somehow...however....when I press the sleep button, the computer obediently goes to sleep. I can then close the lid and everything is tucked in for the night. I can then open the lid and press the sleep button and on it all comes in the right place. It's when I simply shut the lid because I don't want it open while I'm working that it won't comply either. So it seems those settings really aren't doing anything. I just went back and double checked the 'save' function and it seems to be working. Sigh...

  • 2murthas Jan 02, 2011

Oh, at first I didn't understand what you were asking, but yes....there's a setting for plugged and one for when it goes to battery (which I never use) but I changed both of them. The only thing I didn't change was the part where you can change those settings for the power on switch. Can't imagine what happens if you change it to 'do nothing'? All this is under the 'change what happens when you close the lid' part. If there anything else that controls what happens when you close the lid?

  • 2murthas Jan 02, 2011

Disconnected the monitor from the laptop and the screen moved to the laptop screen. Closing the laptop it doesn't go to sleep it just sit's there 'live'...but with the lid down....so that tells us the 'do nothing' toggle works but ...why isn't it doing the same thing when the monitor is attached?

  • 2murthas Jan 03, 2011

Any further thoughts, or should I move on?

  • 2murthas Jan 03, 2011

yeah...there's something about that. When you close the monitor and attached the sv chord, you then have to wake up the computer...but the button is programmed to 'do nothing'. I went in and changed it back to 'sleep' and it worked once, but then not again, so it's some sequence of events I think. But definitely the sleep button will not work and wake up the monitor only with the lid shut. I need to sleep on this again. Thank you for trying to help. I do think we're onto something.....

  • 2murthas Jan 03, 2011

Thanks so much. I'm going to get an HDMI cable and see if that works. I appreciate your sticking with this.

  • 2murthas Jan 03, 2011

Well...it seems this monitor is NOT equipped to handle a HDMI cable. It came with three cables - I can't name them; one has the type of connector that looks something like the ones you'd use for earphones, (the laptop doesn't accommodate that); the one I'm using which I think is Svideo with the wide connector, and another that the computer doesn't accommodate either. Looks like I'm euchred. The computer itself definitely won't run at this point with it's lid shut no matter what sequence I try. I appreciate your patience. You've been great!

  • 2murthas Jan 03, 2011

yeah...I know that's what's SUPPOSED to make all that happen but it doesn't. I want to simply close the lid of my laptop and use the monitor and wireless keyboard, but the minute I close the laptop lid I lose the monitor. I've changed the spots to 'do nothing' which is what I want it to do when I close the lid, but instead of 'do nothing' it reverts back to the laptop...;-(

  • 2murthas Jan 03, 2011

    BTW...thank you!

  • 2murthas Jan 03, 2011

BTW...I'm running Windows 7 and the Power Plan Page etc. is found under Control Panel>Power Options.

  • 2murthas Jan 04, 2011

Tried disconnecting the monitor to see what the laptop is doing when I close the lid. It is doing nothing (just like it's supposed to) but when the monitor is connected when I close the lid, the monitor goes off. Ugh!

  • 2murthas Jan 04, 2011

Yahoooo!!!! THAT did it! Not sure why, but am so thankful for your help. It was well worth sticking with this because now I can enjoy the new monitor and keyboard and put my laptop aside WITH THE LID DOWN! Thank you very very much!

  • 2murthas Jan 04, 2011

Never give up! That was both me and your amazing tech people. I'm sure they'd liked to have just thrown their hands up - it seemed such an easy thing, but it just wouldn't work. This morning the second tech came up with a whole new way of coming at it and it worked! I am VERY happy with your service and the level of attention I received. Fantastic!

This happens when you enabled the do nothing option for one power plan but the plan currently in use is different.

Please follow the following instructions

  1. Open Power Options by clicking the Start button I have a Dell Inspiron - 4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33.png, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Power Options.

  2. On the Select a power plan page, click Choose what closing the lid does.

  3. On the Define power buttons and turn on password protection page, next to When I close the lid, choose what you want your mobile PC to do, both for when it is running on battery and when it is plugged in.

  4. Click Save changes.
the above process will apply the same settings for all the power plan.

For testing purpose create a new user account and enable the same settings above and see if it works. If it works then the user account / profile is having issues.

Usually the normal settings which should be done is on the power options and you set it to do nothing just as you have done. But if you say it has been done that way then i would advice the other settings which could be tried out this involves changing the settings for display.
The button for settings differ from laptop model to model but on most models it comes on the F5 button. You connect the laptop to the monitor and press the FN key and F5 if on your unit the F5 has a symbol which looks like 2 screens on it. If the F5 does not have that symbol then use the F key with the symbol.
Press the buttons till the laptop screen shows only the desktop background on the laptop and the main screen shows on the monitor.
Try this and let me know if the unit still does the same thing.
Hope this solution has been helpful?
Happy new year to you.

This might sound stupid but have you tried saving the settings after doing them?. This might be the problem because if the setting are saved you should be able to close the lid unless your unit has other problems.

what did you use in connecting the monitor to the laptop? Try connecting it with the svideo chord to the monitor when the laptop is closed.

Tried doing some research on your problem and all thak kept on coming up was the mode of connecting the laptop to the monitor. Usually some ppeople use the HDMI cable while others use the SVideo chord. Apparently the type of chord in use could also affect the functions of the lid being shut. try different cables and get back to me.

Thanks for the compliments...if the computer wont run presently with the lid covered then i think th OS might be corrupt. Try running a repair of the system.

What should the connection from my vx2250 viewsonic monitor to my desktop look like?

If your monitor has built-in speakers, you should have a connecting cable with stereo mini plugs on both ends installed between the line out connector (usually green) of your sound card and the audio input connector on the monitor. I have an HP monitor with built-in speakers and that's how it is connected

Hello, I have a 12.1-inch Dell Inspiron Mini netbook, and I was wondering if I can contact it to Dell flat screen monitor?

Depending upon the model, it looks like many of the Dell Inspiron Mini's have a VGA output and will accept an external monitor. Look for a 15 Pin VGA connector on the rear or side of the mini. If you provide a specific model of mini, I can verify 100% if it will accept an external monitor.

Sounds like your monitor is going bad. You might get some more use out of it if you power it off for a couple hours and try again but my guess is this is a heat-related failure that is common on ViewSonic monitors.

Want to connect my Dell laptop to my ViewSonic monitor-help!

Just connect the VGA 15 pin cable from the monitor to the VGA port on the laptop.
Turn on the monitor then the computer.
Hopefully Windows will find new hardware and ask you to run the multiple display wizard.
If the external display doesn't automatically turn on then you need to hit a keystroke combination. FN+ the key on the top row that has an icon that looks like a picture of a monitor. Usually an F key.
This keystroke combination switches between LCD, external Monitor and both.
When you get video on the external monitor, then you can get into the display control panel and change the resolutions and display modes to your liking!
Good luck!

When I use the external monitor S-video port on my Dell Inspiron 1721 running Windows 7 it only displays in black and white despite the internal monitor showing the screen in color.

Okay. For Windows Vista OS.

Go to Control Panel.

Under the Control Panel Home, select Additional Options at the bottom right of the list.

Click on Appearance and Personalization:

At the top right corner of the dialogue box, under Personalization, select "adjust screen resolution"

This will bring you to display settings:

Click the button that says "identify monitors" As each is displayed, it will present a number for which is the default or main monitor (1 or 2) 1 is the main monitor.

To change the external to the main or number one monitor: simply drag the #1 monitor to the left side (if not already there) If it is, you'll want to set the external as the default:

Do this:

While in Display settings, if the external is the #1 monitor, make sure to check the box for "extend the desktop to this monitor" and "this is my main monitor" for the external display. This should switch all settings to the external monitor.

Also, make sure the the resolution is correct for the size monitor you have. For a 20" (such as mine, external Dell monitor) the resolution is at the highest (1920 x 1080).

Also make sure it reads (to the right of that) "highest 32 bit). If this is not an options, make sure you're adjusting the external monitor and not the laptop screen. Otherwise you may need to upgrade your video card.

You should not need to do this though.

After you have set this, go to Advanced Settings and select Monitor. You will see at the top, a list of two monitors; your external with it's brand and name - and the laptop screen type and name. Select the external monitor name: Click on properties, drivers and Update Driver, then select to Automatically search online for driver.

Please let me know if you need further assitance.
