Question about HP Compaq 6735s Notebook

2 Answers

Approximately 5 weeks ago I started getting the message when on AC power that the "smart AC adapter is not providing enough power" (something like that anyway!) And even though plugged in would switch to battery power only. Restarting the laptop always "fixed" this. Then about a week ago the laptop refused to work on AC power at all, only the battery. Of course the battery soon became totally discharged so I removed it, and found that the laptop works fine on AC power with the battery removed. I have tried another identical HP AC adapter to mine and the laptop behaves in the same way. So I'm kind of discounting the AC adapter. The guy at the computer store where I borrowed the AC adpter to test it claimed it was the power port on the laptop that was the culprit, but I doubt this as of course the thing runs just fine on AC without the battery... Strangely though the thing will run fine on AC power with the battery installed if you first remove the battery, then insert the battery once Windows is running, charging the battery also - that is until the message about the smart AC adapter not being powerful enough pops up (usually after an hour or two of use). I've run the battery test and it gets a clean bill of health. So I'm at a loss really. I don't like running the laptop without the battery in (don't know why, as I know it won't hurt it!)

It would be interesting to see if a replacement battery would solve the problem, I have done plenty of laptop repairs that deify logic when it comes to batteries and laptops, you have covered your ground well in your troubleshooting effort.

First, you need to try to power on your laptop with another battery with the AC adaptor plugged in. if your problem was not solved you need to check the power jack on your mothernorad.

bad battery,
you do know that the main batteries are "love to fail"
right,
just about all batteries do that in everything,
even the coin cell, inside can fail in 5years flat.

if power pack is 19vdc with volt meter, good !
the battery is next, yes it runs pc but can be bad.
a bad battery can still have power but overloads the charger chip
it really is an analog world. (reality)
if savvy , always keep a spare battery for moments like this.

Certain models talk to a chip in the adapter, sounds like this one has gone bad. At this point you can live with, buy a new one or pick up a used. This is a fairly popular model and you should be able to locate one from a dead laptop.

MYFI XM2GO WILL NOT TURN ON. ALSO WHEN I PUT IN CRADLE WILL NOT SHOW CHARGING

I had the same problem. This procedure from the "Technical Questions" section of http://shopdelphi.com/consumers/support/faqs/myfi/ worked for me:
"My MyFi won't power up, how do I reset it?
To reset your MyFi, start by turning the receiver off and removing it from its (car, home, audio system) cradle. Then remove the back cover and battery. Using a small paperclip, press the reset button located on the top left corner of the battery compartment. Now plug the AC power adapter into a wall outlet and plug the power port directly into the bottom of the MyFi (battery stays removed). Wait 10 seconds and listen for a beep. After you hear the beep the message "insert battery" will appear. Cycle the MyFi to ensure it powers up and powers down. If the power cycle is normal, then turn off the MyFi, unplug the power adapter, and reinstall the battery. Re-plug the AC power adapter directly into the bottom of the MyFi. Wait 10 seconds and listen for a beep. After the beep you will see the message "battery charging". Leave the MyFi plugged in until it's fully charged. You will see the message "charging complete" displayed. After the MyFi is fully charged, turn it on and reset to the factory defaults. Unplug the MyFi from the AC power adapter and using the battery power leave it on until it fully discharges (approximately 2-5 hours). Plug the MyFi in using the AC power adapter to recharge the unit and resume normal use. If you need help at any point during this process contact us at 1-877-463-3574 for technical support."

I hope it works for you too.

Acer extensa 4420 won't start

I had problems getting an Acer Extensa 4420 to boot or to enter bios. It would never complete the post. After taking it apart, changing the CMOS battery and making several other adjustments I read that a faulty DVD would cause the problem. I removed the DVD and it went right into Windows VISTA. So I put the DVD back in and had the same problems over again. The issue is a faulty DVD and has nothing to do with the motherboard, or the CMOS battery, or any of those other complex issues. It is simply a faulty DVD that refused to allow POST to proceed.

Toshiba a100 not starting on

Try removing the battery, and AC power, and pressing the power button down for about 15-20 seconds, and then try powering on the computer with just the AC power plugged in (no battery installed). If this works then the battery may be shot, and would need to be replaced (if you can find a suitable replacement). If it doesn't, then I would advise bringing the unit to an authorized service center to have the AC Adapter tested with a voltmeter (unless you happen to have one). The power adapter should give off a voltage of approximately 19V. If it's not, then you may simply have to replace the power adapter, either with one specifically for your model of laptop, or with a Universal AC Adapter (and you will probably need a rating of at least 75W, 90W would be optimal). If the power adapter tests okay though, then it most likely is the power coupling (the hole where your adapter plugs into. Repairs to those can usually range anywhere between $150-$300 USD for parts and labour). Hope this gives you enough information to work with, and hopefully gets your issue resolved!
