Came home and all food was spoiled. Refrigerator was not blowing any cool air. I hear the motor but no air. Both freezer and refrigerator were not working. Refrigerator is about 14 years old. Does the refrigerator use freon?

Hi, this whole idea is something you should have a qualified refrigeration technician doing. There's a point in the piping from the compressor to the radiator fins, which can be located behind, underneath or inside behind a plastic panel, where the freon is both installed and removed. It requires special equipment to do both and if you get moisture in the system you can pretty much kiss it good bye. Let a professional tech do this.

You probably don't need to add freon to your refrigerator. People usually ask this question when their refrigerator doesn't seem to be able to keep up with the stuff you put in it.
1. check the bottom of your fridge, there is an air intake grill at the bottom, make sure this is clean and free of lint/ dust
2. make sure the thermostat inside is set properly
3. don't overload the freezer section. the cold air for the fridge comes from the freezer, and if you have too much stuff in the freezer, it will stop the air from being able to flow to the refrigerator section
4. Finally, if you're a little bit technically capable, check the back of the refrigerator, for a small 1/8" hose going down the back of it- make sure this line is clear and free of gunk

If your refrigerator needs freon, there would have been a clear moment when the freon was let out- puncture, break, crack, etc. If this happened there would be oil all over the bottm compartment of the fridge, and probalby the wall behind it- and the compressor would not run at all.

Brett,

Yes you are right. It does use the feron gas to cool the innards of the fridge. The gas may have leaked out (14 years service is a long one). It should be refilled to make it work again. Please call a professional for the purpose.

Used wrong water filter. Now that we replaced with correct filter, there is a horrible odor in the refrigerator.

Hello Mary;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

Putting in the wrong water filter will not effect the smell in your refrigerator. At times the granules in a water filter will break down and get into your water dispenser and ice cube tray. This should not create a bad smell, just cloudy water.

Your plastic liner in your refrigerator has pores and holds odor. You have something in your fresh food section or freezer that is spoiled. Your fresh food section receives cooling air from your freezer. If you have a spoiled product in your freezer you will not smell it because it is frozen. But, as the cooling air goes into your fresh food section and cools down you will smell it.

Find the bad product in your freezer and discard.

With a 50% solution of white vinegar and water wash the plastic liner.

Now you can put a tray of baking soda in your unit, until you purchase deodorizers based on temperature requirements, one especially designed for the freezer section and one for fresh food section. These deodorizer are about $12.00 each.

Try Lowe's and Home depot.

My freezer is working fine, but my refrigerator is barely cool and both units are controlled by the same setting knob. This just happened all of a sudden. Everything in the refrig is spoiling.

It the fan blowing up in the freezer and no cool air is coming down to the fresh food section then I have seen this before. The drain for defrost is clogged. Instead of draining out it is pooling up between the freezer and fresh food side. You gotta thaw out the ice box and open the drain. Nothing to buy. Oil the fan motor with zoomspout oiler.

The refrigerator is not cooling enough.

You will need remove the screws in the back of the freezer section, check to see if the little fan is turning, if not you will have to replace the fan motor, this is what circulates the air and keep the fresh food side cool.

When you open door to freezer do you hear a fan inside that compartment blowing? If you don't the fan motor is shot and will need to be replaced.

Your condenser coil is frozen up with condensate...need to fix the defrost system, most likely it is the control sub module.
