Question about Whirlpool AD50DSL Dehumidifier

1 Answer

AD50DSL5 portable dehumidifier is 6 years old. Now it powers up, the fan blows, coil heats up, but no water is produced. Any idea what is wrong?

Why does compressor continue running, even with dehumidifier turned off?

Hello Bernard, thank you for your post!
I see that you are experiencing an issue with the Frigidaire dehumidifier, FAD704DWD, compressor consistently being on. This could be a possible issue with your control panel or sensor. Since it could be any one of these underlying issues I would suggest contacting the manufacturer for further assistance. Hopefully this information is helpful to you. -Matt

How do you clean the filter

In order to look up the filter change procedure I would need the specific model number. However, filter changes or washing should be done regularly. Look for a very simple lift-out design that is washable in the kitchen or laundry sink. Soak in soapy water and rinse with spray nozzle.

As for the symptom "Blows out warm air" this is expected. The dehumidifier is less than 100% efficient, meaning that the energy that is used produces heat in the exhaust air. A 100% efficient design would still send all the heat energy of condensation (endothermic phase change) into the exhaust air. You should expect 1072 BTU per pint (1 pound of water). This is far more than the heat of crystallization (144 BTU per pound of ice) and therefore much more sensible when you feel the discharge air from the dehumidifier. Dehumidifiers typically operate in basements to both warm and dry the area where a sump pump may be operating to remove the water that seeps through the foundation. A dehumidifier is not a good idea for warm areas of the house. This will decrease the efficiency by increasing the temperature differential needed to get the evaporator coil below the dew point to cause condensation. The condenser coil will be much hotter than expected if the unit is operated in a warm humid room. Only air conditioners which discharge condensate and exhaust air to the outside of the structure should be used to cool a room.

Using heater...cold air out of the back

With heat pumps that's the way they work. In heat mode they are using the evaporator as the condenser and it blows heat out the front and cold out the back. In cooling mode, a reversing valve switches the gas flow reversing the operation of the coils and it blows cold out the front and heat out the back.

My guess is something got into the controls and has shorted the power to the fan. Take panels off of the unit and vacuum, and wipe or brush, with soft brush, as much as you can. Do not use any liquids in cleaning. Hope this works for you.

Our dehumidifier is no longer pulling moisture out of the air. I took the back off and the fan is still running. So motor or condenser? And is it worth fixing? The machine is approximately 6 years old.

Dehumidifier runs but doesn't produce water

Your dehumidifier has a circulating fan that draws the room air over the coils. If there's no air movement out the front or back of the unit, the fan motor may be burned out or stuck, or the fan blade may be broken. If so, you need to replace the fan motor or the fan blade.

No water coming out, and no cold coils

Sounds like the unit needs re-gassing and checking for leaks. It is not unusual for a 3-year old unit to require this - especially dehumidifiers as they are often not used all year round, and the seals that stop the gas from leaking are prone to settling and drying out when not in use. This is not a procedure that you are permitted to carry out yourself, just call a local HVAC/Fridge repairer and see what they quote - the job itself is simple enough depending on the leaks and if anything needs replacing, but the gas itself is getting costly. Make sure they do a leak test first. If not topped up with gas then don't run the compressor - the lubricant that protects the compressor is mixed in with the refrigerant gas and will dry out quickly if the gas has leaked. Hope this helps - please ask for more info if you need it :)

Another question

I have the same problem. I believe it is because it has a refrigerent leak. When there is little refrigerent, the begining of the coil will freeze up. I would really suggest calling the manufacturer. It is defintely something to do with this specific model
