Question about Maytag Dryers

My dryer is throwing the breaker when I put a full load of clothes in it. If I cut it in half ( a light load) it doesn't. Is that the belt or the breaker?

It might be the belt - but I'd first suspect that the bearings have lost lubrication and need to be
lubricated.

This happens on all dryers, and I find that every year I have to tear into my friends dryer and grease
the bearings to keep it running happily for another year.

STEP 1: take back cover off and clean out all the lint - lint is ALWAYS part of the problem when
a dryer is having a difficult time rotating its drum.

There're 2 sets of bearings to worry about:
(1) motor bearings - add some light lubricating oil (not grease) to the rotating ends of the motor
Difficulty: easy
Cost: zero - if you have a can of 3-in-1 oil handy - or any motor oil (like for a car).

(2) roller bearings - add some grease to the posts on which these 2 rollers rotate.
Difficulty: moderate in the case of the roller under the drum - the one near the motor is easy.
Cost: $zero - if you have a can of automotive bearing grease lying around.
Cost: $3 if you need to buy a can (its about the size of a large can of peanuts &has a plastic lid).

I don't suspect the breaker - it seems to be doing a good job of protecting your dryer from burning
itself up by trying with all its might to turn that drum which is so difficult to turn due to
loss of lubrication on its bearings.
Happy new year and may you always have dry clothing.

oops - forgot to mention that the last dryer I looked at (a Kenmore) was turning poorly
due to having one of its rollers actually come apart from its own inner hub - the outer
plastic part had separated from its own hub and was rotating around it - the hub
    had seized onto the post.
the fix was to replace the roller, and grease the roller post.
Cost for a new Kenmore roller: $13 sales tax

Check the drum bearing, drum wheels(if so equipped), drum glides and drum motor, possibly the bearings are getting dried up on the motor shaft and causing a high start/run current, otherwise, yes the breaker could also be weak, also, but not likely the heating element can be starting to short out to the case and grounding out causing a high current draw problem, but not very likely due to its ok on light loads, just not heavy loads

A simple fix may be to just reset the circuit breaker. Sometimes on a double pole circuit one breaker trips which still allows for the dryer to operate with little or no heat. If that does not work, check the vent to insure good air flow and no blockage. If either of these do not resolve the situation you need to look at the thermostat or the heating element itself

I have jst purchased this washer today, however the dryer takes ages,,,,,,their seems to be water going in when its drying, clothes come out hot, but still as damp as when i put them into dry.

Hi, this is normal for a washer dryer, water isn't actually going in, it is condensating and then being pumped away.

when you use the dryer program your are only meant to put half the washing load or less in at a time if there is too much wet washing in the machine it will take forever to dry as it cant get rid of the amount of condensation quick enough so some of it is reabsorbed into the clothes and so it goes on.

so the trick is only to put in a maximum of half the full washing load.

Hope this helps.

The Hum most commonly means that the drum belt on your dryer is probably broken
There is a simple way to test for this.
1 remove the clothes from the dryer.
2 put your hand inside the drum and turn it. If it is easy to turn, the belt is broken. If it is difficult to turn, the belt is good. You may be looking at motor problems.

Almost all of the time, it is a broken belt.
The link below has the full procedure for changing the belt.
Hope this helps,

check for a "glazed" drum belt or a broken "idler" pulley near or on the motor that keeps the belt tight on the drum

Squeaking due to weight of clothing

When you need this kind of noise and there is no abnormal vibration, then it depends on the drive pulley that pull the belt.
If it depends on the weight, and you get vibration it can also depend on bad dumper pads.
Here you can locate dumper pads and drive pulley below the tub.
Both parts are serviceable, repair should not be expensive.
If you need to contact a repair service, you can use the number listed on the owner manual.
