Question about Garmin nuvi 350 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

Compatibility Is there a GPS that you can connect to a computer and download a file that contains addresses to route them. I currently use micrisoft streets&trips on my laptop and put it on the passenger seat, but I am looking for something a little more convienient. I inspect 15-20 houses a day.

I am not aware of a GPS unit that will allow you to do that at this time, I'm sorry to say. You might check with Garmin (www.garmin.com) as they do have GPS units designed for more professional travel, and may have a similar feature, but as far as I know, they do not. Good luck.31

No map data availble

Your Garmin GPS has an internal memory or an SD-card that contains an "operating system" and "map data".The operating system is like windows or Mac OSX. It contains the menu and everything the GPS displays. The "map data" is a digital roadmap the GPS uses to calculate your route. If the map data was on a SD-card that was inserted in your GPS, it could me that you lost the SD-card. That could be the reason your GPS can't find the map data. Sometimes it happens that when people connect their GPS to a computer to update the "operating system" of the GPS something goes wrong. For example, when you disconnect your GPS from the computer while the update software is still writing data to your device, the connection gets lost and you're left with corrupt files on the GPS. It could also be a defect in the internal memory of the GPS. I suggest you try to update the operating system with a program called "Garmin Express" (just google and easy find it). You need to connect the GPS to your computer with a USB cable. Then you can perform an update. I hope it helps to solve your problem. What you could also try is to soft reset your GPS. To do that, you need to remove the silver or blue frame around the screen of the GPS (it pops off). Behind this border there is a reset button.
If the map data is completely gone, and you don't have a backup there is only one solution: Buy the latest map for your GPS online and download it to your GPS. It's expensive. In that case it's better to buy a new device in a shop. Most new devices contain Lifetime online map updates (model name nuvi -then the number - LM or LMT) (LM= Lifetime Mapupdates T= Traffic information) Then you can update your map data every three months if you want.

Upload and Download to an Explorist 100

Summary:
Even though the Explorist 100 does not come with a data cable, or software to download or upload data to a computer, it is possible using an after-market cable and a nifty piece of software.
What I use: Note: be sure to download the software for the USB adaptor from here
  • GPSBabel software (free) from http://www.gpsbabel.org
  • A macintosh iMac and a Macintosh Macbook (but it should work fine on a PC)

What I do:
  • attach the cable to the back of the 100 as shown here
  • READ the pages at pc-mobile carefully!
  • Either use the GUI version or command line version of GPSbabel

See examples below for some usage tips....
Examples:
  • [command line] - output to Google earth format!
  1. ~/applications/gps/current/gpsbabel -t -i 'magellan' -f /dev/cu.usbserial -o kml -F 2-feb-08-track.kml
  2. ~/applications/gps/current/gpsbabel -w -i 'magellan' -f /dev/cu.usbserial -o kml -F 2-feb-08-waypoint.kml
  3. ~/applications/gps/current/gpsbabel -r -i 'magellan' -f /dev/cu.usbserial -o kml -F 2-feb-08-route.kml
where...
-t = tracks
-w = waypoints
-r = routes
-i = input format
-f = input file
-o = output format
-F = output file

Troubleshooting:
  1. If you get a speed or connectivity error from GPSbabel:
  • [on a Mac] check to see if /dev/cu.usbserial exists usng a terminal
  • retry the command ... sometimes the 100 doesn't seem to initialise properly
  • Check the FAQ's at http://www.gpsbabel.org

[Note: there may be other types of cable / software available, other than the items mentions here]

Corupted map after update? How to correct?

Perform the update again. I think was an error on the first update.

Try the below procedure:

1. Plug one end of the USB cable into your GPS and the other end into your desktop or laptop computer. The GPS device will load the appropriate driver automatically, and a message on your GPS tells you that it is connected to your computer via USB.
2. Open your Internet browser of choice and type in the following web addres: "http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-27 "
3. Download the appropriate version of the software for your computer (Windows or Apple) and Install the WebUpdater by following the wizard (accept defaults).
4. Click "Start," "Programs," "Garmin" and " WebUpdater" to update your firmware and your maps. Periodically check and make sure your software is current.

How do I get the address data downloaded from the unit to my computer. I have the unit connected to my computer but none of the files look like data files that can be copied or exported?

Hello,

To get personal Addresses and POI's onto your Garmin unit you will have to use a software called "POI Loader" here is a link to the software.

Hope this helps!

I got the VR3 gps with back-up camera less than a month ago, the first day it worked perfectly fine, then when I installed the route 66 stuff it started showing me some really long message saying to...

Ok so this happened to my gps after an improper shut down. Here is how I fixed it. Follow each step carefully and make sure your gps is fully charged before beginning.

1st open up the route 66 disk to see files not actually accessing the program. Right click on the disk and tell it to open from my computer. you will see many files one folder will say memoryimage.

2 Then on the gps click on settings and go to backlight setting backlight to the dimmest stetting. Now go into power and tell your gps to never standby.

3 Plug your gps into your computer then turn it on. Windows mobile will come up click on connect without setting up your device. Under file management click on browse contents of your device. You will now see what is actually on your gps. Open NANDFlash.

4 Now select all items except the route66 folder in the memoryimage folder of the disk and move them into the NANDFlash folder of your gps. When it asks how to transfer tell it to replace current folders with the same name. It will then take several hours to transfer.

5 On mine the route 66 exe file would not transfer back into the actual route 66 folder so I created a new folder then transferred the route 66 exe file from the route 66 folder in memoryimage of the disk into my new folder in NANDFlash. Once it is transferred you should be able to click navigation on the gps and have your gps load route 66. Your maps will be locked.

6. I kind of forgot how I did the next step because I cannot get back to where I was because I have already activated my gps. Go into the main menu from inside route 66 and either enter the extras folder or route 66 settings. Somewhere in one of these you will find a place to activate your route 66. It will then give you a website and an id for your gps. Go to the website and enter your gps id and the code from the voucher code card which came with your gps. Once entered on the website you will receive an activation code which you will have to enter into your gps. I recommend you turn off your gps then turn it back on and give it time to find you. You can go into gps status to watch for a signal and once you have a good signal it may take several minutes to locate you. After it has found you it should be working fine.

Ok I had same problem. Copy the mapupdater .exe file to another computer with internet access. Connect your GPS and then run the updater file. This worked for me. Good luck

GARMIN NUVI 200 SAYS NO DETAILED MAPS FOUND THAT SUPPORT ROUTING

I had the same problem. What you do is place your finger in the lower right corner where the green button would be and cut it on. When the prompt comes up, click yes. when the no detailed maps comes up again, hold down the green button again. You should then be able to upload the maps.

With the Nuvi 350 you can only add one stop to your route see Page 5 of the Owner's Manual downloadable from Garmin.com and also contained in a file on your Nuvi. This Limitation of Adding only one Stop is also contained on Page 4 of your Quick Reference Guide a copy of which should have been bundled with your Nuvi
