the big knob, at the base of the water heater, turn to warm or Hot. if water is not hot after that, you have other issues, it will take a hour or two, for the new settings to take effect.

Rheem hot water heater says set temp? no hot water


If it is a gas water heater you must set the temp on the gas valve. Press the two outside buttons until they flash. Now you can use the arrow button to set temp.

The water tank suddenly increased water temp, both elements look fine. could it be a bad temp control?


Probably thermostat, just as you suspect.
Electric water heaters can be fixed by homeowner.
Replace both thermostats for 25$ and see of problem persists:

Thermostat may be heating element hotter than normal causing a change in temperature causing the noise. You could try adjusting temp down a little on thermostat. It sounds like it's getting the water very hot and thermostat may not be working correctly.

1. Turn off power vent blower and set water heater temp to vacation (lowest temp)
2. Turn on power vent blower
3. Turn the water heater temp from vacation (lowest temp) to hot (highest temp) four times.
4. Set the water heater temp to normal
