There is a way to only do an upgrade, but I would recommend backing up whatever data you have/need and installing the fresh copy of windows. You may want to purchase a new computer for a few hundred dollars you could get a machine that wouldn't be outdated for years. Here is just one example this is a refurb, but you can get new ones in this price range as well.

This is a very fast computer and would be compatible with everything for years. So for only a couple hundred more then what you would have to pay for windows. This also may be alot easier as installing a fresh copy of windows does not always run smoothly. Sometimes it is hard installing all the current drivers especially on older pc's where they may not even have Window's XPdrivers.
Hope this helps and let me know how it goes.
Thanks,
Lee

I press F8 on my dell dimension 2400 and it does nothing. I upgraded from xp to windows 8 yesterday and have the black screen from hell. It said it needed to restart so I hit ok and now I am screwed

Sounds to me like your old machine running Windows XP is not compatible with Windows 8! How much ram do you have? I am saying in general that Windows 8 has a lot more going on than XP! You might try upgrading your graphics card, that is usually a major issue when upgrading! I hope this helps as I can only guess with the information provided! Neighborsboy! "Be Easy!"

Hi have tried everything!! my windows media player 10 will not recognise my intel celeron d inside driver for windows xp, what do i do??? im not that experienced, but have tried everything!

The Intel Celeron D Inside Driver? Windows XP is designed for the Intel Celeron Processor and does not require a driver. Window Media Player 10 however requires a valid copy of Windows XP with SP2... If you go to the Windows Update website it should upgrade your PC and the version of Media Player for you.

Service pack3 crashed puter - after reinstall machine thinks extra hard drive is a disk drive.

You can get to the BIOS by hitting DEL or F2 at start up.

However, that does not have anything to do with a drive letter.

Drive letter designation is set in
START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS>COMPUTER MANAGEMENT>DISK MANAGEMENT.

Hope this helps.

Sorry to inform you but you cant downgrade from vista to xp on this model I have found most systems that are designed to run vista lose several drivers when downgraded to xp.

the only solution that will restore drivers would be to reload vista by purchasing an upgrade version of vista (this allows an upgrade from xp to vista and will restore drivers only catch is your xp operating system must be xp home with sp2(service pack 2).

When you removed vista from your machine you actually downgraded by replacing the vista operating system with XP.

Assuming that you have Windows XP home, here is a link that explains how to do a reinstall.
Scroll down about halfway to where it says "Steps to XP clean install"

Default monitor

Hi, if someone has upgraded your version of windows the only way to go back to a older version is installing your windows xp home edition cd, only problem with that is when you downgrade you lose everything, so you will have to make sure its all backed up. in regards to the monitor, different monitors can support different resolutions, if you cant change it up any its quite possible you got a more basic one, All the best John
