Coolant can and is lost without getting in the oil from a leaking head gasket or cracked head or block. In the years as a dealer tech most often oil was not in the coolant.

I think you have a blown engine cylinder head gasket or gaskets and or a cracked cylinder head or heads. Any qualified auto tech can confirm this guess is the the problem. Do not attempt any repairs until a shop has looked into the problem.

Below is an image showing the torque sequence. The torque procedure is a three step process:

Step one torque all head bolts to 14 ft.lbs.
Step two torque all head bolt to 36 ft.lbs.
Step three torque all head bolts 49 ft.lbs.

No the v tech valve is located in the head and is run off oil pressure.

start in middle and work outwards left right left right with the bolts ,torque ??easy start with a rachet which will allow about 40lbs then a snap on knuckle bar till you can feel bolts stretch.as to type of head???is it 8 valve or 16??16 valve dearer to do

Hi white smoke is produced by water in the combustion chambers do to bad head gaskets ,crack heads ,or lose cilinder head bolts,you should take it to a good tech before will cause any mayor damage .....

You can do a search on Google for "240SX owner's forum" and some enthusiast forums will likely show up. They'll probably have illustrated tech procedures posted by members who have done it. It's a VERY involved job. You need to remove the entire timing assembly (timing belt, tensioner, etc) after you tear apart the front of the engine (and since you're taking it off, you should put on new timing parts, so plan for that), and after that's off, the top of the motor (spark wires, fuel rail, etc) has to come off, along with the valve cover, so you can remove the head. You'll need the new head gasket of course, and new head studs/bolts as well, plus a new valve cover gasket and possibly several other gaskets as well. You will also need to find the torque specs for each of those bolts, and the proper tighten/loosen/retighten procedure for the head bolts (which will likely be listed in a tech procedure on one of the forums).

That's it in a nutshell - it's not for the faint of heart by any means.
