Question about Kenmore Washing Machines

1 Answer

Dear oldguy, I'm the guy with the Kenmore top loader washing machine that won't agitate nor spin. I had described that there is a "belt" looped loosely around one "pulley" but nothing obvious as to what it might attach to. Granted it is a old machine (80 series) (model: 110.28882790 and was here when I moved in to the house. It does fill and drain however. Maybe time for a new washer? 6778225@centurylink.net.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Kenmore-Parts/Washer-Parts/Model-11028882790/0582/0153200?pathTaken=

This washer doesn't use a belt. It uses a Motor coupler between the motor and gearcase.

The belt that you see might be a sound deadening "rubber band" that's used around the break drum and isn't really that important.

Since it does drain, the problem is likely the motor Coupler

Look in the section for the motor, pump gearcase and you'll see the Motor Coupler.

Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive washers use a "Motor Coupler" between the motor and transmission.

It's used as a fail safe device and consists of three parts.

Two of the parts are the same, plastic units with three prongs that fit on one of the motor output shafts and the other on the transmission input shaft. Between them is a rubber piece with six holes.

The power from the motor is transmitted through the rubber piece to the transmission.

The other shaft on the motor directly drives the pump. This is likely why the machine drains.

If the motor coupler is broken, or worn, the motor may not be able to send full power to the transmission for agitating or spinning.

See the following for how to remove the cabinet, pump, motor and motor mounting plate to inspect and replace the motor coupler.

If the coupler looks damaged, it's a relatively easy fix.

Pry the plastic pieces from the motor and transmission. Some people use a claw hammer but I've found that using a small (6 inch) pry bar works well.

Carefully fit the plastic pieces over the motor and transmission shafts and press them in place (Use a 1/2" of larger socket to put pressure equally around the pieces.

Put the rubber piece on the transmission plastic piece.

Replace the motor mounting plate.

Carefully line up the plastic prongs on the motor based plastic piece to the three un-used holes in the rubber piece. If they don't line up right, the coupler could be damaged.

Mount the motor, don't forget the two screws, put the pump back on the motor and use its' clips.

Put the cabinet back on, don't forget to plug the lid switch back in and re-mount the console.

As an aside, you might want to see the following Whirlpool / Kenmore Service Manual for top load, direct drive machines for reference:

You should be able to get an operators manual at the following site:

Speaking from experience, these machines are very reliable and best of all, easy to work on and cheap to fix.

Top loader does not spin fast enough to spin dry.

possibly the clutch is slipping, i've heard you can take a #10 washer and put it in one end of your clutch spring caps and that would tighten it up

Need to replace belts

This model washer doesn't have any drive belts. It uses a motor coupling in place of a drive belt. If you need to replace the coupler, the following link explains how to do this:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

You have to remove the entire washing machine case to access the interior. The back does not come off. Its not as intimidating as it sounds, though. The part number is included in the link I provided and can be purchased at appliancepartspros.com for about $11. Just use the "Search By Part Number" feature. If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

Ge top loader washer agitator does not work

To check the agitator. Start the washer into wash cycle. Once started Push down on top of agitator. If it catches some times or all of the time when pushing down, then then doggets are worn, under the agitator. You`ll have to remove the agitator to see these. If by pushing down on the agitator, nothing changes, Then you probably have a transmition problem. Check this and let me know what you find.
