Question about Harman Kardon SoundSticks II Computer Speakers

1 Answer

I have a set of Harmon Kardan Soundsticks II needing a simple but confounding repair. One of the small pins (#5 I would say as you go over and around the arc of pins) of the satellite speaker connectors (male 5 pin DIN?) is broken off. Is there any possibility of replacing the plug, or the whole wire myself? Can I send it in to be repaired for a small fee? Lastly, please tell me exactly what the connector is called/numbered please? Or is it completely proprietary? Seems a waste to throw away a whole speaker and spend $40+ for a replacement over one tiny pin. Thank you for your help.

MiniDIN-4 Connector Pinout. Looking at the male connector from the rear (solder side) Pin 1 = White Pin 2 = Bare Wire Pin 3 = Light Grey Pin 4 = Dark Grey Outer case Ground = Clear

Hi arlo865, are these Pinouts the official MiniDIN-4 Pinouts? The reason I ask is because you say looking at the male connector from the rear. Thanks

Hi, Kazim
Firts things First:
1) check connector for 2 way sound. you can use a headphone for this.
2) you also buy Ipod dock sound speakers, there is Ihome speakers, great ones, for less than 25.00 dollars.
3) you have to see balance on those speakers.
good luck

If you go to the Harmon/Kardon website, you can find where to buy replacement parts.

http://www.harmankardon.com/

Select product support on the front page, then go to parts.

Most likely the power module needs to be replaced. You can't do that at home, unfortunately. I recommend taking it to Hi-Fi Confidential:

If the mentioned cable is the one that is connected to the motherboard of the sub woofer and has two connectors for the speakers on the other side - please contact the Harman/Kardon support of your country, as they may be able to replace this part (actually this is a very rare part) it also may occur that the company will not be able to replace the part with a genuine one, but with a modified one. You can also try to contact some companies that would be able to replace this cable with a custom-made one.
