This has nothing to do with the power cord. The tv shuts down because a part (or the soldering to it) fails when heated.
On a tv this old it's almost always the filtering capacitors from the power source: when heated they lose their filtering capacity so the voltage which they are supposed to stabilize becomes erratic so the tv's control processor crashes, shutting down the tv. This is how you replace them

But you must inspect every single soldering in there, with a magnifying glass, to avoid some nasty surprises later on.

This may not be the power cord as you think , if so the cord must have a poor contact with the mains plug which makes less contact heating the points to spark and cut off. If so use a low grade emery paper to clean the plug points of the TV. make sure there is good connection with the mains socket. if this is the plug , you can cut the plug off and install a new one.
However if you want to change the power cord, buy a good replacement type with the correct rating , remove the rear cover, take the power cord wires from the main board and replace.
Please check your power supply, the main mother board for possible DRY SOLDERING JOINTS that seems to cause this shut OFF's.

Why do you think replacing the power cord will cure the problem? It most likely won't. The chances are that it is switching off due to overheating. Have you checked any fans fitted are spinning properly or are not blocked with dust. If ther are no fans there is probably a capacitor in the power supply needs replacing.

This is not a power cord issue. Your tv is going into protect mode, which happens when something creates an overload on a circuit. My money would be on faulty capacitors. What is the status of the LED at the front when the set goes off?

  • Anonymous Jan 03, 2011

You did not tell me what is the status of the LED at the front? Please provide this info so that we can check whether the self test diagnosis is able to detect the fault. It will make our job a lot easier.

Hi,

This is an internal failure. This is not a problem with a fuse or power cord. This is really common on this set. Before we proceed further, wanted to have few more details :-

1. How old is the set?
2. Any noise that you hear?
3. Is the picture is fine when you turn on the TV?

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

  • Anonymous Jan 02, 2011

    Thanks for your response!!

How long ago you have changed the bulb?

Be advised that as i am not there, i could only present few possibilities that you need to eliminate after inspecting and testing the TV.Other than this, it could be an issue with power board/ deflection board / main board. If you have the TV repair experience, revert and i could provide few pointers that would be helpful

Let me know,so that we could proceed.

    Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

    Thanks for your response!!

You are most welcome to consult other experts, however there is no temperature control. This is a common problem. I am not sure, few questions :-

    1. How did you determine power cord as a fault?
    2. Temp control sensor????

I am sorry, however, speculation is not a solution for TV repair.I wish it could have been a simple solution. I am even willing to help you to get this repaired if you have any repair experience. The only reason to respond is to make sure you does not do anything that would either damage the TV or YOU.These are not flat panel TV's that you could easily open and repair. In my country, we usually have a certificate to perform repair on these TV's.

Hope to hear from you soon.

    Thanks and Regards

My lcd tv wont come on but the stadby light is on ?

Hi.

The TV starts in forced standby. The state is also called "Protect Mode". Protect mode kicks in whenever an internal fault is detected. The error is detected by controller circuit and the PSU is forced in standby mode, shutting down all voltage lines apart 5VDC to keep standby on.

First try disconnecting the power cord for ten minutes, reconnect after ten minutes and restart the TV with no device connected.

If that does not help it means that there is an internal fault and that the TV must be tested and repaired replacing the defective part.

The defective part is usually the PSU. Among components that fail quite commonly there are the capacitors on the power board. If the capacitors look swollen or if there is trace of damage on PSU board, then the affected parts must be de-soldered and replaced. If there is no evidence of damage at a glance the parts must be tested using a multimeter and following schematics from service manual.

If you need to call a technician use the phone number listed on the owners manual or on the manufacturer support web page.

Regards.

I HAVE AN HCM 4215W SAMSUNG 42 INCH TV THAT WILL WORK FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES THEN SHUT OFF...I USE THE REMOTE TO TURN IT ON BUT ONLY THE RED LIGHT COMES ON. IF I UNPLUG IT AFTER ABOUT ONE MINUTE THE LIGHT...

Having in mind that a generic lamp will give you 4500 to 6500 lamp hours and the Phillips will give you 6000 to 8000 lamp hours and that you TV is 4 years old more likely you are looking to replace you lamp; The lamp itself typically uses AC current and about 15,000 volts to ignite the lamp's mercury vapor gas. The gases inside the lamp react when electricity charges up the mercury gas creating very bright light. The voltage drops to keep the flow of electricity to the lamp.
If you can hear your TV fan working is NOT you power supply, but if you hear a constant clicking you BALLAST needs to be replace,
A ballast is an electrical component used with a fluorescent bulb (or mercury vapor lamp or arc lamp) to conduct electricity at each end of the tube. It supplies the initial electricity to the bulb that creates light, and then it regulates the amount of electricity flowing through the bulb so that it emits the right amount of light.

Do you have enough air flow to cool it?
It may be overheating....add a fan blowing into it and see if that keeps it on.If it does put a strong small computer fan in somewhere to keep it cool.

Samsung HCM4215W,shuts off.

Sounds like a short in the power wire, it takes about 10 to 15 minutes to warm up then shorts out and when it cools down you can watch for 10 to 15 more minutes before it shuts off again, you need to take it in and have the powercord replaced because this is very hard to do from home and one mistake can make the whole tv not work.
