Question about Kenmore 24032\24036 Top Load Washer

Good advice, but to my surprise, part not broken

Comment by mercfoto, posted on Jul 09, 2008Ok, got through it easy, but here's the thing....the plastic part isn't broken :( But the bolts were not real tight on the transmission. Would that cause the problem? After inspection, coupling looks good too and transmision seems to be turning properly, drive shaft too.

    Hi Mike,

So, mysterously enough, the drum did start working but only after I cleaned out some debris around the top underneith the plastic collar and then physically turned the drum a few times. Whatever that did, seems to have done the trick. Functions great now, but it also has a new life :) Thanks for the advice, repair went really well.

  • if the bolts in the transmission are too loose, then the plastic piece may not disengage the break (rare).
  •  can you turn the plastic piece  and spin the tub? you should be able to do it with your hand, turn it (i think counter clock wise) and you will feel the break disengage and the tub should spin freely.
  • check that plastic piece good because its just a small tabs that breaks off usually.

Determining the Age of Your Maytag Appliance

This advice applies to all appliances manufactured by Maytag. Determining the manufactured date of most appliances is accomplished by looking at the SERIAL NUMBER. On Maytag appliances this is determined by the following method:

The LAST two letters in the serial number identifies the date code.

Example: 123456FY

The 1st Letter is the YEAR.

A – 1978/2002
B – 1966/1990
C – 1979/2003
D – 1967/1991
E – 1980/2004
F – 1968/1992
G – 1981/2005
H – 1969/1993
J – 1982/2006
K – 1970/1994
L – 1983/2007
M – 1971/1995
N – 1984/2008
P – 1972/1996
Q – 1985/2009
R – 1973/1997
S – 1986/2010
T – 1974/1998
U – 1987/2011
V – 1975/1999
X – 1988/2012
Y – 1976/2000
Z – 1977/2001

The 2nd Letter is the MONTH

A – JAN
B – JAN
C – FEB
D – FEB
E – MAR
F – MAR
G – APR
H – APR
J – MAY
K – MAY
L – JUN
M – JUN
N – JUL
P – AUG
Q – JUL
R – SEP
S – AUG
T – OCT
U – SEP
V – NOV
W – OCT
X – DEC
Y – NOV
Z – DEC

NOTE: Some later model Maytag appliances are manufactured by Whirlpool. The serial numbers may be in a different format. Check the MODEL number for any of the following prefixes:

106, 110, 198, 562, 664, 665.

These prefixes indicate the manufacturer as Whirlpool.

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,
Whilst the filter is removed it is normally possible to see the drain motor and ensure it is not jammed by a foreign object such as a needle or a toothpick. It should be able to be turned by hand/finger- ENSURE THE POWER IS OFF!
At this point it is also possible to test if the motor works. No clothes or water in the machine, select a spin cycle and put the power back on. You should be able to see the motor turning at some point, possibly straight away. Using something suitable like a glove see if it is easy to briefly slow the motor down. If it is easy then the motor is malfunctioning.

If this has assisted you please consider a 4 thumbs up for the rating.
Thanks and good luck!

My GE washer machine is spitting brown oil onto the clothes.

Hi,

Initially and based on your description, one strong possibility is that the seal on the bottom of the drum is faulty. This seal acts as a cover for the bearing underneath. Although this is repairable, most techs would not go through the trouble of replacing the bearing alone since it is force fit into the drum. The normal procedure is the replacement of the entire drum assembly, rather expensive. Due to this your posted comment of considering purchase of a new unit may have more merit. Depending on the design, in some other versions, rather than the bearing, it could be the differential.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

I believe this is a similar model to mine, which did the same things. This is a direct drive style (no belt). What possible happened is the coupling in between the motor and transmission has broken partially, and it "grabbing" only under a light load. It's a relatively inexpensive (under $5) part, and can be changed pretty easily.

These couplings can be found on Ebay:

If this link doesn't post correctly, just search for "whirlpool coupling". Good luck.
