Since I uploaded some movies onto my hard drive the to no longer recognises it

Always make sure you use good cables. Don't forget to power up the HD. Be aware if the power for the 2,5 " drives has to come over the USB cable, that the computer has enough output power on its USB sockets. Could be one or two sockets don't have power or not enough to power up a HD.
Just try another cable and another USB socket on your PC.
Or when you have an external USB hub, make sure you connect the power supply that came with the hub. Without one, your drive will not het any power.

Seagate 9sd2a3-500 320 GB Problem

Improve the Fixya experience for everyone by voting!

It sounds as though you have one of the following problems:

  1. Dirty contacts that can be cleaned with CRC electronic component cleaner;
  2. A faulty drive that may have been dropped at some point in time. Your drive may have a three-year warranty and Seagate will replace it. Just go online and provide the serial number; and.
  3. You may have to reinstall the drivers. The Seagate website can provide this if needed.

The usb connecter on my 500gb portable hard drive has snapped off the board. Can this be repaired or is there another way to recover my data that was stored on the hard drive?

unless you can access your 500gb portable hard drive you wont be able to recover any data you have on it
is the connector on the hard drive or the motherboard
if you have more than one usb out put you might be able to connect your portable hard drive
if you have any spare sockets on your motherboard
or you could get usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap

if you need more help with this or if i have misunderstood the problem post a reply

click start control panel administrive tools ,computer management ,device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or
if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver
sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems also make sure the computers Ram and Cmos battery are securely seated
if this fails to fix the problem

you might have to install a usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap
hope this helps

Hello there,

1. Is your Seagate portable external drive new? 2. Pug your external hard drive.
If it is follow instructions below. Guide is based on a Window7 operating system, you wont be having trouble if you're using Windows XP or Vista there will be a slight difference.

Note: you must be logged as an admin
a. Click start menu, right click-on Computer b. Left click on Manage. c. On Computer Management window. d. Left pane, Click Storage, Disk Management. you will see all available volume. e. If your Seagate is a new drive, it will appear as Un-allocated volume. f. Format the drive using NTFS file system before you can use it. you can also partition your new hard drive and assign a drive letter to the partition before you can use it.

Hopefully this guide helped. If you have questions feel free to ask me.
Thank you for using FixYa.

My Seagate portable 320gb external hard drive fell on the floor now my computer and laptop don't see it( won't let me get in to the hard drive) , how do I fix this , Important files on it Help please

Since this external hard drive is USB powered and felt on the floor, you could have a broken USB connector or interface card, both located inside hard disk case, you should contact Seagate technical support or repair service, or if you have electronics skills, you could open and check hardware by yourself.

External 500gb hard drive not readable

Check the partition size in Disk Management (if running Win7 - download a free Partition Manager if not) and see if the system is seeing the partition correctly. Seagate has recovery software available on their website but you may just have to repartition and reformat.
