Uninstall AVG. AVG is probably causing your programs not to open. Uninstall it by using "windows installer cleaner"

Norton 360 blocks alot of websites as well, my Mother-in-law had this problem until i Uninstalled Norton360.

I M WORRIED ABOUT VIRUS. WHAT CAN I DO NOW?

If you are worried about viruses affecting your computer, I suggest you install an anti-virus program on your computer. There are commercial anti-virus programs such as Nortons and McAfee.
There are also freeware anti-virus programs on the Internet, AVG is a good program. Generally commercial programs offer better protection.
AVG also offers a commercial version of their freeware anti-virus program.

Advantages and Disadvantages of AVG Anti-Virus

AVG offers a number of compelling features and the right technology to keep your PC protected. As one of the best antivirus software products reviewed, AVG offers a great solution that delivers advanced protection and simple use. But apart from these AVG have some advantages and Disadvantages.

Advantages

Protection: - AVG Anti-Virus is fully armed to protect your computer from threats from a number of angles. The software includes antivirus and antispyware protection, as well as complete online protection from harmful sites and downloads.

Ease of Installation: - AVG Anti-Virus is easy to download and install. The installation is straightforward and doesn't require a restart. And while it's not the fastest, it's relatively quick and performs an update immediately.

Improved features: - Though you can download AVG protection software freely, but the security software is by no means ineffective.

It's improved features like Link Scanner, ID Protection makes it the most effective scanner.

Disadvantages:-

When uninstalling AVG version 7 or 8 in Windows XP/Vista and attempting to install other anti-virus programs such as Kaspersky Anti-Virus or Norton Antivirus, the latter programs will not install.

Instead, they show an "incompatible software installed" error even if the uninstalled software has been removed using the control panel.

This happens because software that updates and changes can add registry entries that were not added when the product was originally installed. A signature update dated November 9, 2008, crippled some computers, as it allowed the software to treat "user32.dll", a major component of Windows XP/Vista, as a Trojan and advised users to delete it. Users who deleted the file in question were put on a continuous reboot loop. The problem was rectified a few days later with a new signature database and further safeguards were added to the product.

AVG is an Antivirus product. If you do not have any antivirus protection (such as AVG or Norton), you need some. You can go to Start, Programs, Control Panel, Add and Remove Programs to see if it is listed. If it is listed you have it. If it is not, you can download it here.

There is a free version of AVG antivirus. It is a good product. After one year, it tries to make you purchase the upgrade. You can uninstall it and reinstall the free version. Sometimes there are traces left when you uninstall it, and you have to use a "cleaning" tool. Then you can re-install the free. Or purchase the upgrade.

Trying to remove avg.the control panel shows removed but it is still in my stemton

Go to start menu, go to search, type avg, select search, Once you see the file, right-click and delete it.
You must uninstall a program before going to add/remove and deleting it.
You can also find the file under my computer,, c:/ drive, program files.

You can also go to start menu, run, type regedit, hit enter, Look for H-KEY_LOCAL_USER and then expand the list, find software, and expand that list. FInd AVG, right-click and delete it. Do the same under H-KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

How to keep your computer virus free

Many people that I have helped with computer viruses had recently purchased new computers which have virus protection included in the software bundle. The problem with these virus protection programs is that the updates are only good for the first year. After that, you must pay a fee to continue to get virus updates.

Many consumers don't realize this and after the year is up, do not renew the membership with the anti-virus company, leaving their computer unprotected from incoming viruses.

So, if you purchased a computer over a year ago, be aware of this problem. You will need to pay the yearly fee to maintain your anti-virus updates or get another anti-virus software available on the market.

There are some anti virus programs that are free or low cost. I have found AVG to provide a good quality free anti-virus program for home users. You can access the download at http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free.

Also, remember to be aware of emails from senders that you are not familiar with. Also be very careful about opening attachments on any emails. Be sure you know who sent them to you. Even then, if your not sure, verify with the sender that they actually sent this attachment to you before opening it. Email attachments are one of the most common ways of spreading viruses.

So, be careful and happy surfing!

Removal of AVG8

Try bootin to safe mode by pressing F8 on turning on the system then try to uninstall by going into the control panel [Programs(vista)/Add or Remove Programs(XP)]

By doing this you will be able to uninstall the AVG anti virus.
Then restart and the system will boot in normal mode then install Kaspersky. Never have 2 anti virus in a system. Just a word of caution.
Cheers !

AVG wont work nor will my laptop

Looks like a certain toolbar feature was included with the AVG that wants to keep starting. Go to Start button, then Control Panel. In the control panel, click Classic View on the left, open up Internet Options and click the Programs Tab on the top of the Internet Options Box that opens up.

Then click the Manage Add-Ons button. Beside the word "Show:", check under each option from the dropdown menu (Add-ons that have been used, Add-ons currently loaded, etc) and in the box below the Show menu, left click to highlight anything that says AVG, then click the round button near the botton to Disable that add-on.

Also check your Control Panel > Programs And Features for anything that mentions an AVG Toolbar as it was possibly separately installed and has it's own Uninstall Listing in the Programs and Features.

If those don't help, you can try this:

You can try to download and install the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Download and install the Cleanup Utility, then start the program from your Programs list.

***Be careful with this tool...you do not want to remove the wrong things or use the Remove All button, or no/most programs will not work anymore***

After you start the program, browse down the list and anything you see listed with AVG, left click to highlight the item then click the Remove Selected button at the bottom.

Hopefully this removes any traces of the installed AVG.

Please completley remove the norton security from my computer...trying to run something comcst says you need to do something to rmove it...please do asap ...thank you

Go into Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs. Wait for the list of all programs to load up.

Go down through the list and look for Norton Internet Security. Remove it. It will take a very long time, sometimes 1/2 hour or more depending on speed of computer. Reboot the computer after it has been removed, especially if/when it asks you to reboot after the process.

After rebooting, go back into Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Look for Symantec or Norton's Live Update, remove that as well. Also remove any other Symantec/Norton Anti-Virus or Internet Security programs as well. Then reboot the computer again.

Your computer should be much, much faster now. So now you need a new Anti-Virus program...

I've found in my experience that Norton and McAfee do more damage to some computers than good, besides the fact that they are severely over-priced. I would NEVER install either Norton (Symantec) or McAfee on anyone's computer. Matter of fact, I just had to remove Norton 2008 from a lady's computer today, an old Dell 2400 because her system was too old and slow to run new Norton.

My suggestions for much better anti-virus would be...

- Kaspersky Anti-Virus (search for it on Google, etc)

- Trend Micro PC-Cillin Anti-Virus (search for it on Google, etc)

- AVG Free Anti-Virus at http://free.grisoft.com, they also have more elaborate versions with more protection for a cost.

I personally use AVG on my computers, and my family does as well. It's very effective and gets out viruses that even Norton cannot remove.

Anti virus

Hi,

You of course can run multiple instances of anti-virus programs in your computer assuming that the anti-virus will allow competition in the resources. However. more often, this would only eat on your memory and processor so it is not advisable and there is no significant gain if using 2 or more anti virus bot several downside.

How to check what anti-virus is running, there are several ways:
1. Go Start, All Programs and check what anti virus has been installed;
2. Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Program, the programs installed would be listed including your anti-virus;
3. Go to Start, Run, type "msconfig". next window go to Startup tab, it will show what programs are running upon Windows start up including your anti-virus.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
