Hi there, unfortunately what you are describing is called the Yellow Light Of Death (YLOD). When the PS3 was originally made Sony used lead free solder in their consoles. Lead free solder is not as flexible as normal leaded solder and over time due to expansion and contraction because of heat given off by the console's components hairline cracks formed in the solder joints between the CPU and GPU and lots of PS3's failed. You have got a couple of options, you can either have the console professionally repaired which is going to cost around £50. If the console is out of warranty Sony will only replace it for a cost of around £130. As a last resort if you are good with electrical items you might want to have a go at repairing it yourself. If you google YLOD you will find plenty of guides that will instruct you on how you can repair it yourself.

Please bear in mind that once a console has the YLOD there is NO guarantee as to how long a repair will last, it could be a couple of hours to a couple of years

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa

You need to have the motherboard fixed, do to so you need to take the PS3 apart then reflow the board.

there is a great 6part video guide on YouTube to view for free. 6 videos from the same fellow, each video about 10mins long, goes over everything for you.

http://www.youtube.com/user/gilksy1 and its free unlike some eBook site.

I actually used the videos shown by this guy to fix about 30 PS3 units with no problems, you just need a few things though like a heat gun and some thermal paste. sounds hard, but it's very easy once you start!

Hope this helps in some way.

60gb ps3 wont start up.

Possibly the very common mother board failure. Slight possibility that the power supply is failed, but the capacitors in either component can be tested with capacitor tester and service manual to test for the faulty component.

Playstation 3 turns green then yellow then red

The problem is known as a YLOD on the PS3 or Yellow Light of Death. Your PS3 is most probably a 60gb model as they are mostly known for this issue. The PS3 is fitted with a very good cooling system. Unfortunately some of the 60gb models still overheats (either the GPU or CPU). This causes the YLOD and is very similar to the XBox' s Red Ring of Death.

The best is to return the PS3 if still under guarantee. You can attempt to repair it yourself at own risk. There are no statistics on how long the fix lasts. Most of the YLOD consoles I repaired myself are still holding out and it seems the fix is more permanent than the Xbox 360 fix. Here is a link to the guide that must be followed and it works (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_Ic1_TY-GU) The other parts in the series you will find on the same page. There are 7 parts

After the fix a couple of things can be done to prevent future overheating:
Do not keep the PS3 in a confined space.
Keep it away from dust.
To enhance airflow, remove the cover over the HDD when switching it on.
Switch it off when not playing.

Playstation 3 won't power on?

Hello.
This is a hardware failure caused by heat. I have done TONS of research on this problem as I have a unit that is like this too. But I bought mine used. I hear that Sony will fix it or send you a replacement for FREE. I have been told by over 30 people that Sony did it for them. Just be honest and polite to the customer service people. Go to www.playstation.com choose your region, click on playstation 3, then Support (upper right corner) and there should be the contact information.
If you need any more information, please do not hesitate to hit my "Ask Me" button.
I hope this helps. Good luck to you!
