So i've had this laptop for about 1.5 years and it just started doing this.
I would work on it and all of a sudden the HDD would just turn off. I would be like Double U Tee Eff and then it would start back up again. It was fine and dandy. Not the perfect experience, but it was working.
Well after a couple times of doing that it started doing it and then not restarting at all.
I thought it could've been a virus, since my friend's laptop developed the same symptoms at about the same time, but i couldn't explain how a virus will work like that even outside of windows... it would not let the HDD start up even at the bios level :(
Give me some leads pleeze

Re: Hard Drive on Gateway laptop turns off by itself…
Get the avgantivrus program and run this is a free version download vis pc and transfer the exe to the laptop and run to install run it as soon as you can then you might be able to save all files out using safemode once all files are removed use your installation cd or recovery cd and re-do operating system from scratch.

try turning on your laptop in safe mode with command prompt by hitting f8 on startup,
try to check your your hard drive on typing "chkdsk" command. it will show the status of your hard drive. if it doesnt work theres problem with your hard drive
1. Charge the battery for 2 hours,
2. Press the power button.
If the laptop does not start, you can do this:
Please use the VGA port (VGA external monitor), also please do these:
1. Unplug the AC adapter,
2. Remove the battery,
3. Remove the hard drive,
4. Press the power button and hold it for 15 seconds,
5. Plug in the AC adapter,
Restart the laptop.
If the problem persist,
Note: Do not insert the battery, and do not install the hard drive.
1. Unplug the AC adapter
2. Reseat the memory (remove it and reinstall it),
3. Plug in the AC adapter,
Restart the laptop.
If those actions do not solve the problem, then your GPU/motherboard is dying.
Please test it:
1. Remove the hard drive and turn on the laptop. If the laptop display BIOS, then replace the hard drive with a good working hard drive,
If it the laptop screen does not display anything, then:
2. Test it using an external monitor.
- If the external monitor blank too, then there is something wrong with your laptop's GPU and or motherboard (you need to replace the motherboard)
is it the laptop itself switching off or is it the hard drive turning itself off after
30 mins because by default many laptops are set to turn off the hard drive after 30 mins
also by default the display turns off as well after a short time
these setting can be adjusted in control panel power options

turn on the power , tapping delete to bring up the BIOS on the main page look to see if the hard drive is being detected everything that is in the computer ( main comp- onents ) can be seen in the BIOS goto the boot tab make sure the detected HDD is booting up first not the optical drive , when finished press F10 hit yes to save and see if the computer will boot up I have 4 Gateway notebook computer , they are very good notebooks however they are notebooks and notebooks are prone to needing repair tweaks constantly every once in awhile the sound just stops working like if you switch from headphones to speakers , all Gateway notebooks come with a reinstall drivers utility , Goto start/programs/gateway recovery center from that utility you can reinstall drivers programs and many other default setups . there is only 3 things that can make a computer not turn on 1. the hard drive 2. the video card 3. the RAM , in BIOS you will see which one of these components are not working .
Gateway laptop is really ****.
I bought Gateway MX8711 in March 2007, after 6 months i use it...the hard disk failed.
Gateway replaced a new Hitachi hard disk for me but not more than 8 months and it failed again.
Gateway told me that i have no more warranty because the repair warranty is only 90 days.
I bought this laptop and use it not more than 2 years, the hard disk was failed twice.
Usually Hard disk manufacturer provided 3 years warranty for the hard disk. The manufacturer year of the hard disk is May 2007....they should able to help because the har disk not more than a year being used...but they don't. This is really bad customer service and not fair to the buyer.
I will not buy any Gateway products anymore....i swear.
You see that hole in it towards the front?. If you look underneath the laptop you should see a tray that looks like that with a screw in it. Just take the screw out and the whole caddy should slide right out.
