Hard Drive on Gateway laptop turns off by itself…

So i've had this laptop for about 1.5 years and it just started doing this. I would work on it and all of a sudden the HDD would just turn off. I would be like Double U Tee Eff and then it would start back up again. It was fine and dandy. Not the perfect experience, but it was working. Well after a couple times of doing that it started doing it and then not restarting at all. I thought it could've been a virus, since my friend's laptop developed the same symptoms at about the same time, but i couldn't explain how a virus will work like that even outside of windows... it would not let the HDD start up even at the bios level :( Give me some leads pleeze rathersmart is offline Reply With Quote my computer started malfunctioning about a week ago i don't know what happened but in that same time frame my Norton 360 subscription finished and i had no more protection . At first when i turned it on it would load but nothing would show on the screen and the keyboard and mouse didn't work then one time it it just miraculously started loaded then i saw the screen load to BIOS then it wouldn't load past BIOS then i stopped seeing the screen again then it worked i was soo happy cause it loaded al the way to the log in screen then it shut down. so i started moving faster this time i logged in then it just shutdown after 4 mins or so i need help please anyone helpme please ~.:Djsmog:.~ mail me at d_smog@yahoo.ca

Get the avgantivrus program and run this is a free version download vis pc and transfer the exe to the laptop and run to install run it as soon as you can then you might be able to save all files out using safemode once all files are removed use your installation cd or recovery cd and re-do operating system from scratch.

best of luck

Speeding up laptop has many factors involved, hard drive space, amount of RAM, CPU and/or age of your laptop. If hard drive is limited in space then clearing space on hard drive may help the laptop cache things. Adding RAM may help and upgrading the CPU may help as well. Laptops are limited in the things that you can do, other than, replacing the laptop itself.

It sounds like one of two things, either your hard drive is bad, or the formatting on your hard drive is so bad Windows cannot deal with it. To troubleshoot it try booting the computer up with a live run CD or a bootable USB drive and see if the hard drive is accessible . If you booted up with a live run CD or bootable USB drive that has an operating system on it you can reformat the drive (provided it opens) and that will do it. If it does not open, or is not accessible you will have to replace the hard drive

hi, i recommend re installing windows, that should get rid of any software errors... however based ont the unmountable_boot_volume (which im assuming was on start up before windows starts ) it sounds like your hard drive is broken. if its 7 years old you want a pata hard drive (commonly known as an IDE hard drive) they are a bit more expensive than sata hard drives as they are older, newegg would have one, and i believe i bought one at best buy about a year ago for ~ 50 dollars (it was a 350 gb hard drive)

i also recommend seeing if you have any SATA ports, as a sata hard drive is about 60 usd for 1 terabyte.

please refer to the pictures below as reference:

PATA (also known as an IDE port)

SATA (note, some motherboards have the sata ports coming off of the side of the motherboard, where the cord comes out horizontally. both of these pictures are sata.)

I have a Gateway laptop that I'm told the integrated video card is not working properly. What is the correction for this problem or do I need to have the hard drive replaced? Thanks

The integrated video card means your video card is on the mainboard. If your Graphic Card is faulty you need to replace the mainboard which will be costly! The Hard Drive(HDD) is the device where your Operating System(OS) & data are stored. Replacing the HDD will not fix the the problem.

Hope it helps.

Start my laptop samsung r530 up,after a few secs it goes on to partition setup ,press next then it restarts ,then goes onto samsung recovery

It seems that your operating system is already corrupted and wont boot to that, that is why its automatically prompting you to do the recovery. If you proceed with that, it will technically reformat your whole hard drive contents, wipe out all your files, programs, everything, and wll restore itself to factory default. If you need important documents on your hard drive, I suggest you dont proceed with that and try looking for local technicians who specialize in retrieving files from your drive, then after that, you may proceed with the recovery. If that will still not work, try loading an operating system cd, usually it comes with the computer when you bought it// otherwise purchase a full version of it. If those wont still work, you may need to replace your hard drive.

When i turn on my laptop it gives me the option of starting in safe mode or in regular, but neither of them works it just says please wait or welcome. what do i do?

Two ways to go.
1 - If you DON'T NEED YOUR INFO:
Run the restore program that came with your laptop. If you need help with that, write back.
2 - If you DO NEED YOUR INFO:
As long as the hard drive is good and you have given no indication that it is not, remove the hard drive and temporarily install it in a desktop as a slave. Boot that system and get the data that you need. Programs cannot be copied this way. Then replace the drive and continue as above.

Need System Restore Disk/Software

the system disk are usually on a partition on the hard drive.
if you didnt make a copy of the HARD drive or made a cd from the images on the hard drive, gateway wont help.

you could buy a cd from them

some gateway have a special boot directory to boot from

try looking for that.
