Question about Microwave Ovens

Open Question

My 2002 whirlpool microwave model # FGMV174KF started making popping noises, the same kind of noise if the is metal in it. We turned it on to pop some popcorn and it began smoking and smells like plastic burning. I think it is history. When I tried to look it up with this model #. It keeps coming up Frigidaire. Nothing under Whirlpool. I am beginning to worry that this is not even a Whirlpool. Can you explain?

SOURCE: GE Spacemaker making odd noise

We are having the same problem with our XL1400. I suspect it has something to do with the turn table but don't know for sure. We would be willing to disconnect the turn table...anything to stop the noise but don't know how.

SOURCE: My MW8108p is flashing and making noises

Do not use the oven! It sounds like the wave guide cover is burned and this poses a fire hazard should you continue to use it. Have a technician look at it and if this is the problem, it is usually a cheap fix.

SOURCE: Microwave pops and sparks when running. Nothing

in the top of unit is a round cover and damage is coming from here. This is serious and needs to be checked out. the cover contains a stirrer that moves waves around<<circulates them>> in this cavity probably paint is thin and allowing waves to penetrate metal of cabinet. Call manufacturer and see if there is anything they will do for you before taking it upon yourself to either get repairman or get rid of unit.stirrer is probably damaged and cabinet burned from waves.

Are you sure the plates were Microwave oven safe? Some dishes have metal in the colors of the design. A snap, crackle, pop noise normally means there is metal present in the oven.

The magnetron has become defective, especially when it is followed by popping noises and is laboring are classic signs of failure. The other two components that should be checked are the high voltage capacitor and diode, but considering the repairs needed it would be cheaper to replace.

I have a ge spacemaker microwave JVM1640sj03. It makes a popping noise as the table turns when I have food in it. What can I do to fix this and why is it happening. Many thanks.

theres something metal inside the microwave look for a screw or something that may have been placed in there during a repair. metal causes the microwaves to reflect back to the magnetron creating the popping noise you hear.

We have white

there is a component called a spatter gard inside the oven at the point where the microwaves enter......if food or other foreign substance gets stuck there, then it will start to burn ...the smell and popping noise is coming from the spatter gard.....to fix it you must remove the spatter gard..replace it if it's burnt and /or sand paper the spot clean and then paint the area with a high temperature paint called mr. touch up......to protect the bare metal from the microwaves.....hope that helps

Can't explain the popping, but the fan has a heat sensor that will turn it on when it gets to a factory set temperature.

GE xl1800 spacesaver microwave

It sounds like you could have one or two problems. Using the oven with metal in it could cause the magnatron to go bad at its tip causing it to arc and making a popping sound. It could be that there is bare metal exposed somewhere causing the popping sound. Take it in for service!!

The magnetron is bad. Probably cost about $50 or $60 for the part. Not too easy to replace, but it can be done.
