Hard drive noises usually indicate a mechanical failure. Call dell and have them resolve the issue with a replacement drive.

If the hard disk is making clicking noises and the BIOS cannot detect the hard drive, then the hard drive is faulty. To get the Dell operating again, you need to replace the hard disk, install Windows on the new hard drive, plus the Dell's device drivers and your programs.
You can use the Dell's recovery CD to reinstall Windows. If you do not have the recovery CD for your model Dell then you can get one from the Dell WEB site.

My hard drive is making a strange noise when it is used. It sounds like a heartbeat and it occurs in a random time interval. I know it isnot much to start with but i cannot say anything else about it then...

Hi,
Any strange noise like excessive clicking, grinding, some weird sounds etc. actually indicate a failing hard drive.
Failing hard drives often show warning signs of their imminent demise. If you're lucky enough to see or hear one of these signs, stop what you're doing and immediately back up your data. They say prevention is better than cure so if your computer's hard disk is making some strange clicking sounds, BACK UP YOUR DATA IMMEDIATELY (As the drive is not operating smooth and may fail anytime).
After making backup of your important data on CD/DVD or External Drive, you may scan the drive for surface errors, format it and see if it works properly or not. It would be better if you seek professional assistance for examination of the disk.

Hard drives are mostly under warranty for at least one year. Claim warranty, if possible.
Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

hi.
maybe problem is caused by your Power supply.
so i recommend you to do these:
1- remove the main hard drive and only connect "250GB lacie porsche hard drive".
and see is it recognized or not.
2- go to the bios (with pressing "delete key" at start of turning on) and navigate to power center.
then enable power saving mode.

Open the external hard drive cover, remove the hard disk inside, and fix it back. Try again and let's see what happens.

If it still does not work, insert the external drive into the computer, feel the hard drive if it spins/vibrate from inside or if it makes a cracking noise.

If it spins/vibrate, it means the hard disk is still working. In that case, you have to get another external drive case/cover.

But if it makes cracking noise, then it means the hard drive is damaged and you need to get another one.

I wish you all the best.

Makes strange noises & it is coming from the hard drive location. is taking too long to start & to operate.

If the noises are coming from the hard drive, these sounds usually mean the hard drive is getting ready to give out. These noises are generated by the read/write arm dragging across the platers that are inside or the platter spindle bearing is going out. There is no way to repair them. This will also cause the computer to operate more slowly as the computer must put together the pieces of information it needs to operate. I would recommend backing up all information before it fails then replacing the hard drive.

Internal Hard Drive noise

it only means that your hard drive is experiencing bad sectors and it might become a mechanical problem which eventually the device should be replaced once the hard drive cannot be read or detected anymore. there is no solution to it.. all you have to do is wait.

Listen to your power supply and see if it is making a faint buzzing noise. Try your device with a new power supply. With a new power supply my drive now runs fine, and was not corrupted.
