Open Question

I have a Statue of Liberty commemrative pocket watch that needs a new battery. I have taken it to several watchmakers but no one seems to be able to figure out how to get into it. My Dad bought it for me when the the Statue of Liberty was being renovated. Can you help or tell me where I might get a manual.

I have a Pulsar Solar Watch that seems to need a new battery. Where can I get a new battery and should I replace it myself?

This is a complicated repair, not just a battery exchange. Go to a watchmaker. Probably 40 bucks

Quatz watch not running even when i put a new battery in

Hi,

Several things could have caused this. First if the battery was not installed properly or by a trained technician the movement may have been damaged. We see this all the time with watches taken to the 'Mart' stores or to Jewelers and the little places at the mall. None of these places have trained personnel and they damage a lot of watches.

The other possibility is that the lubricants in the movement have dried out and are now gummy and act like glue holding the gear train in place so the power from the battery cannot get it to move.

Both of these problems require professional help. A watchmaker can repair either of these situations.

Hope this helps,

I have a Geneve watch and need to change the battery. The case seems to have no way of opening it and seems to be one piece and I took it to the jewelers and they can't replace the battery. Is there any...

Of course, there is the way to change the battery, but for this you have to visit your closest watch repair shop. I do mean WATCH REPAIRS, not the jewellers. Decent watchmaker will definitely open your watch and will replace the battery. Your watch's case appears to be a monoblock. That means you'll need to lift the crystal first, pull the stem second and just then you'll be able to extract watch's movement for replacing battery. Do not forget: jewellers and watchmakers are under one roof, but their trades are completely different. No jeweller can do watchmakers job and vice versa. Rate me, plz.

Need a new crystal for Elgin 19703647

You do not need to go all over the world to find replacement for your watch glass. You have plenty of excellent watchmakers in France. I've been there, so, I know. All you have to do is to find your nearest watch repair shop and bring your watch in. Watchmaker will get all the measurements and will replace the glass.

I left the battery in my watch for a long period. when ihad the battery reknewed it would not work

This could be due to several things. 1) if the battery leaked it could have damaged the circuit or gear train requiring a watchmaker to repair this.

2) the person replacing the battery could have damaged the coil, battery contact, gear train or gotten dirt in the movement. Again a watchmaker would be needed to repair this.

Hope this helps.

How do I open a medana pocket watch?

First -let's check out what type of watch you have. If you push the crown in and it turns freely back and forth with no resistance at all - this is battery driven watch.
If you do the same and feel and hear some clicking and resistance- this is mechanical (spring driven) watch.
Next - the case: Usually all pocket watches have snap-on casebacks. Take an eyeglass and examine the case. Even if you think there is no any grooves or gaps- try to pry it using watchmakers caseback opener (about $5 on ebay).
In case if there are no chance to open caseback - that means you have one of the cases assemblad watch glass fitted last and that means you have to take glass out first and then only to get to the movement.
As you will not be able to get the glass out without braking it, the only solution will be to visit your nearest watchmakers shop and ask for help.

Rate, please.

Phillipe Stark PH1079 watch - Can't get back off to replace bat

There is nothing wrong with your watch. The problem is in tools the jewellers are using for opening the watch.
Despite being under one roof, watchmaking and jewellery are completely different trades and are miles apart. Jewellers usually are equipped with very basic watch repair tools and the case openers are no exeption.
You have to find your nearest watch repair shop and ask for watchmaker, not jeweller. Any decent watchmaker will have the right tool to open your watch and replace the battery in a matter of minutes.

I need watch backs for both a Coleman pocket watch and a Coleman men's wristwatch. I went online Friday 08-08-08 and saw that the watches are manufactured by an independent company. I cannot get back to...

Is the wristwatch a round caseback? If it is you may be able to go to a watchmaker/repairman and have him fit a misc back on it. If it isn't you may have problems finding what you need. As a watchmaker I don't throw ANYTHING out, and most don't. Then go on the internet under pocketwatch repairs. There are a few places that work ONLY on pocket watches inside and out. I will look that up for you. Get ahold of me after you go to the repair shop, will go from there.
