My ac adapter suddenly started smoking but i was able to turn it off immediately. will it affect ny hard drive? is it a problem with the hard drive or adapter?

Surely there is a short-circuit problem with your adapter. The adapter is propably off .You cant know for sure if hdd was affected.Dont connect the adapter to the case anymore for now.
Most external hard disks can be disassembled with relative ease.Disassemble it and check at a local store to find a case for external hdd (relatively low price) so you can see if the hdd works properly or not.

Acer Aspire 3610 wont start up, black screen comes up stating disk error. I am unable to have it start in safemode by pressing F8, nothing happen. THe only thing that does happen is a black screen appears...

The other way to fix it, you need to disassemble your laptop if you've familiar the unit. Usually the HDD has not been attach check the HDD cable (SATA or IDE) replace it. On other hand if the same things happen and you don't have windows CD, it's time to buy an windows CD installer. Reformat your unit to fix the problem.

Good luck!

"no valid device!" message

Did you connect your HDD correctly?

If so have a look at the back of your HDD, next to the IDE port you will find a small jumper, make sure that jumper is set to master.

Enter your Bios and check that your boot priority is set to boot from the HDD first.

Also make sure that your IDE cables are firmly connected on the motherboard as well as the HDD.

Replace hdd on my laptop

First, make sure that you can do this task. Acquire the proper tools and software and disassemble the unit, making Sure that you know where all those parts go. Unplug and remove the drive and install your new one. Put it all back and power up. You're now ready to install that software that I mentioned earlier. Your BIOS should allow the new drive to be recognized and will now let you install your software. Good luck with this....accordianman
