If the battery is under warranty return it otherwise I recommend replacing the battery according to your model and make using a 6-9 cell preferably to hold a longer charge.

This can happen with "smart" batteries. Remove the power and the battery from the laptop. Wait 30 seconds. Then put the battery in, followed by the power.

Will not take charge
Sounds like your battery is knackered, only thing to do is replace it, you can check the battery with a voltage meter or take it back to the supplier and ask them to check it foryou.
