Thanks for the info, I really did check all of the resistor carefully, so it must be something else? When trying to adjust the convergence I still can't do it with the magic focus (manual or automatic). I'm thinking going into the service menu, I bought the service manual but it's not telling anything about the codes in the menu. I'm running out of ideas with this tv, what started out as a little project has turned into longs hours. The tv techs want to charge some hundred dollars just to look at it, myself being an electronics technologist thought of being capable of solving the problems. The red color is the problem, it's coming out to the left horizontally doing a gost like image to the left. Have any idea which part I could check for this red problem? Thanks a bunch

    ok so I checked resistors: RK46, RK42, RK50, RK54, RK58, RK62, RK63, RK43, Rk47........all are good out of circuit and in the 5% tolerance........what now?

  • denis-tech Aug 03, 2008

I did not check the jumpers yet, I'm kinda confused as to where I measure these voltages that you outlined above, between which points should I measure, as in where should i position both leads of my voltmeter? I guess what I'm looking is a common grounding point.

  • denis-tech Aug 03, 2008

    Whats a cold ground point?

  • denis-tech Aug 04, 2008

ok so I was measuring voltages as you described above, went to measure at QK01, all of a sudden TV shuts off, I go to put it back on,turns on for like a second shuts off again, and now it keeps doing this over and over, what happened?

  • denis-tech Aug 05, 2008

I am using a digital voltmeter yes, but I did try unplugging the set, doesn't help, tv turns on then shuts off, seems like the flyback wont fire the bulbs I don't know.

  • denis-tech Aug 06, 2008

Nothing is glowing, all that happens is I'm hearing a clicking sound, the Tv is trying to turn on but doesn't. I can see two green LED turning on will this clicking sound happens then they turn off. The transformer does not turn on at all, little noise coming from it but thats it.

If the the TV is shutting down now meaning it is going to protection mode and it is cause of high current due to short circuit.
Go back from the beging and double check if did not accideentally short anything when doing the voltage check, also check the horizontal out put thransistor if it's ok.

When changing convergence IC you should have check all the voltage before removing the old one to make that there is no open resistor or shorted diode ans so on, as you mention you got the service manual for it and if you are familiar with schematic diagram it will tell you pin by pin if how much voltage are present.

FYI - Convergence IC's has 2 votalges - negative and + possitive.

Good luck.

Did you check the resitors out of circuit? As its very rare when a Hitachi doesnt open at least two on the affected circuit. If you checked the resistors in circuit an open resitor will read good even though its actually open.

Ok heres how Hitachi DCU systems work. If the red has shifted horizontally you have to check the red Vertical. Verify that RK46 is within 5% tolerance checked out of circuit. Then check the DCU voltages at jumper K273 for +5V if bad check IKo1 for +7v

Then check DCU jumper K274 for -5v if bad Check QK01 for -7v. if both the jumpers are good then Check IK04, and IK05 pin 5 for +30 - +33V if bad check FK01. then check. Then check pin 4 of IK04, and IK05 for -30 - -33V if bad check FK02. If you get the Plus and negative voltages off the pins 4 and 5 of the two ICs then it has to be RK 42, 46, 50, 54 ,58 or RK62 is either opened or outside of the 5% allowable tolerance.

Did you check the DCU jumpers as outlined above as that wll determine if the DCU is defective or not.

The jumpers are just a strand of wire thet jumps the circuit. use any cold ground point.

Any heat sink will be a cold ground.

Are you using a digital ohms meter? If so the battery could have shut off the transistor. Try unplugging the set and then replug it in.

The fix is that Hitachi is a POS. It's kinda like a FORD product, found on road dead. There are problems all over the internet with Hitachi TV's. I ain't gonna give up on putting them down until they fix my 3 1/2 old TV with most of the problems you people are describing.

Is there a way to manually adjust the convergence on a Hitachi HDTV modol #43FDX15B?

Hi James,

If Auto Focus (Auto Convergence) won't complete the set-up stop trying to adjust it. There is a fault in the convergence circuit!! ICs have to be replaced and maybe some burnt resistors.

If you access the service set-up menu and try to adjust the "defective" circuit the Auto-focus may not work correctly after the IC's, etc are replaced. Experienced technicians know that the service menu allow easy resetting to correct the misalignment, etc. "First Time" technician can be easily misled, waste a lot of effort and never get a correct picture.

If you want to attempt the repair, buy the correct parts from a service guy that does this type of work. I suggest having the repair done by a local competent technician that is experienced with Hitachi Convergence Problems. It is considerably more challenging than changing a fuse.

Our Convergence Gallery shows a variety of Convergence Faults. If you live in Toronto, ON., Calgary, AB., or Vancouver BC. it costs $257 for Hitachi in home convergence repair.

Good luck.

I have a hitachi 53fdx01b projection tv. The colors are shifted and droop downward. the cross hairs don't move when I try the convergence adjustment. Will new chips fix the problem?

If trying to adjust the convergence doesn't work, then is the convergence ICs that are defective. I would suggest to inspect all the solder joints on the ICs and resistors for possible cold solder joints. If everything looks good then replace both ICs and also measure resistors that are connected to the convergence ICs.
Let me know if you require further assistance.

Magic focus does not work. RGB projections do not line up.

That symptom is usually caused when the convergence ICs and associated resistors fail. You can get convergence repair kits for the various Hitachi models from www.tvrepairworld.com the kids contains both ICs and the associated resistors plus the CD with repair instructions.

I have a 53 inch hitachi ultravision #53UDX10B Its out of focus and when you press the magic focus button it trys then pops up with the # 4 in the corner is this a convergence problem or what ?

Yes, you have a convergence failure. Usually requires replacement of 2 X STK ICs and any burnt resistors associated with the function that is faulty.

Look at the user menu and compare with images on our Convergence Gallery. Try to adjust in the convergence adjust menu. Identify the functions that do not work and make note. When you replace the ICs, pay special attention to the low ohm resistors for the non-working function. They will be located near the colored plug associated with the non-working function. If red vertical will not adjust, check resistors near the red plug.

There are many posts and websites that offer "new and improved Convergence IC substitutes. My advice is to use the original part numbers and replace any burnt resistors with original values. Many ICs purchased on the Internet are very poor quality and do not work. Many users get substitute replacement ICs and never get their TVs working again.

If you have other electronics repair experience, this job may be done with some chance of success. If you have no experience, there are many secondary problems that can and usually do appear. Determining how to fix the secondary faults and how to correctly align the TV is difficult without prior convergence repair experience.

Some of the common problems encountered are:
1. Poor solder techniques, resulting in damaged PC boards or poor solder connections.
2. Poor quality or wrong parts installed and recognizing this problem.
3. Resistors open or burnt. Some resistors are weakened by the initial faulty IC. Replacing with a "good" IC and starting the TV causes the weakened resistors to burn up. IC may be ok but there are one or more open resistors that measured ok when ICs were being replaced.
4. Wrong ICs used, causing resistors to burn up.
5. Resistors that measure normal and become faulty when heated by current flow.
6. Recognizing that convergence circuit is repaired correctly and alignment is needed.
7. Major alignment in service menu required because data is corrupted by multiple tries of magic focus or manual adjustment while faulty circuit conditions exist.
8. Major alignment required because user adjusted centering rings or physically changed mechanical focus adjustment, then mis-adjusted convergence settings trying to correct mechanical alignment faults.
9. User has not connected plugs and connectors correctly and caused secondary damage or mis-alignment trying to correct secondary issue.

Physically replacing the ICs may appear simple but recognizing if a fault still exists or if correct repair is required causes many attempts at repair to fail. Keep it simple. Replace with good quality original part numbers, measure suspect resistors and adjust only what is necessary.

There are only 3 things to fix, IC failure, resistor failure and user induced secondary faults. Data processor and memory is bulletproof.

You need to go into the menu and adjust the convergence. It may be magic focus on this set. If that will not do it then replace the convergence ics. Check any resistors around the ics for open or value change.

Convergence lines are SLANTED. Red line is above

Your TV most likely a convergence failure. ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. Its a fairly easy DIY job or you can call in a pro. If you want to do the repair yourself check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

Convergence repair problems.

alot of people make the mistake of putting two STK392-150 Ics in the Hitachi , and most times it will not work unless you change all the convergence resistors.. If youre going to upgrade hitachi to anything other than the stock ICs, it is recomended by Hitachi to use the STK394-160 ICs but then you have to change the ratings on the resistors. You can get the upgrade kit for your hitachi at the following link.

Do not adjust any knobs as instucted in the previous thread if you TV have a convergence problem. Doing so will only make things worse. The blog does however show you how to fix other common problems with these sets.

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
