Question about Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

Kenwood Tape Deck - when i press the Play, FastForward or Rewind buttons it does'nt work or activate the command it supposed to do when pressing those buttons? i just hear a little motor-like sound, like coming from the transport controls trying to work, but its not turning or moving the tape at all ? its those "soft-touch" type of transport buttons, so maybe the mechanism that the buttons activate went out? its a Kenwood Stereo Cassette Receiver KRX-5, i got it as christmas present from my brother, so its used but looks new. main question is why it does'nt start moving/playing once you press a button? and then just lets go and stops after only trying for couple seconds? i took top off and looked carefully around and everything looks clean and new in and out, like it did'nt have much heavy use, no worn marks on buttons, the rollers and tape head area looks clean and perfect. i kept seeing people replacing rubber belts? but i did'nt see where those are located when i looked around inside. any tips or advice on how i could troubleshoot this? or if its just not even worth fixing? thanks in advance for any ideas or things i can try - Jon

Its the pinch roller this was a common fault we used to see the reasons for the roller not turning can be several too many to run through on a computer it really needs to be looked at by a service tech

thanks for the quick response, i just signed up and used this for the first time, ......... i guess i'll get a shop to give me a quote on fixing it, but i have a feeling its better to just buy another one(used), especially since you can get a real good one cheap these days, off ebay etc....

actually come to think about it, i'll still keep this unit, cause it still functions as a good radio/tuner, and has mic input, aux input, phono, etc... - Jon

Pull the battery out to reset it. Get a DV tape cleaner to clean out the tape deck.

That should solve both.

Kenwood KX-79 CW dual cassette hook up?

Just connect the deck via tape 1 the out of the deck going to the in of the amp. While the out of the amp goes to the in of the deck.

The tape deck itself will automatically choose the player that plays the cassette. One will play the other will be on pause (if you press both play buttons) till the tape stops then the other will play. For recording from tape to tape one deck will be the copy and the other the copier. There should be a dubbing button which you press to record tape to tape. Some models have a high speed dub also. For recording from the amp unless both decks have record buttons you will only be able to record with one deck. Make certain the dub button is not set.

The PLAY function of my Cassette desk doesn't work anymore

Well two things have to happen to make tape move in a cassette deck. One is the Capstan shaft has to rotate and that is usually a belt link to a motor through a pulley. The second thing is you must have take-up torque. If the tape moves but the take-up reel does not pull it onto the take-up reel then you either have a eaten tape or the deck will shut off. in your complaint it could be any of these items- maybe a bad Idler from the reel motor or the capstan belt is old and stretched.

I cant play a tape on my JVC camcorder. I press play and all i see is a blue screen. When I rewind or fastforward, i can see the images. any ideas??

Try to clean head with cleaning cassette,if this won't help, your camera has problem with tape path(pole base alignment). Consult your nearest JVC Service Center.

Kenwood KX-W6080 dual stereo cassette tape deck

I have the same unit which had the same problem. It has to do with dirty contacts on each tape mechanism.

Remove the main cover and look down on each tape mechanism. You will see 4 contacts on each unit. These come in contact with the tape. Remove each unit by removing 4 holding screws.

You will now be able to spray some contact cleaner into the front of the plastic contact cover. I removed the covers on both of the second from the right contacts so that I could clean them with an abrasive. These are the main ones.

Put everything back the way it was and the tape deck should work great.
