I just sent a reply, There should be an access point to the drive motor that will allow you to turn it and then this will release the carriage lock and lift the carriage so that you can remove the tape.

How too change ink

Follow these procedures to help you get access the cartridge. This is taken from the online manual of Fixya.

1. Turn on the unit, then open the print-carriage access door by lifting the
handle until the door locks into place. The print carriage moves to the center of the unit.
After the carriage stops moving, lift the latch to release the print cartridge, then pull it toward you out of its slot.
If you are removing the black print cartridge in order to install the photo print cartridge, store it in the print cartridge protector.

. Remove the new print cartridge from its packaging and, being careful to touch only the black plastic, gently remove the plastic tape.
Caution! Do not touch the copper contacts or ink nozzles.

5. Push the new print cartridge into the appropriate slot until it clicks into place. The tri-color print cartridge goes on the left and the black or photo print cartridge goes on the right.
Pull the end of the latch toward you, press down until it stops, and then release. Make sure the latch catches below the bottom tabs.

Close the print-carriage access door.

Epson Stylus 1200 lights indicate carriage jam

This means that your Epson printer has come to its end of life. In short, Epson wants you to retire your printer and buy a new one. Your Epson printer may be in good shape which is often the case. But Epson has this build-in "feature" which they want you to buy a new one.

During startup the drive belt slips and gives an error

Open the printer's door and look for the print carriage. It's the platform that moves back and forth over the paper, probably where you put new cartridges. Unplug the printer, and check this belt and its pulleys to see if it's either broken or possibly covered in ink. The drive belt will be black and have gear teeth on it. If you see a metal or plastic ribbon, that's more likely the encoder that let's the printer's computer read the position of the carriage. See if you can nudge the carriage and make it move a little; it may simply be jammed. Check the carriage's moving path and make sure it's not obstructed. Any other problems would probably best be handled by Epson.

Epson R320 carriage jammed

The ink cartridge is probably not inserted correctly.  Unplug the printer and manually move the carriage to a location where you can take the ink cartridge out.
Remove it and reinsert it, making sure that it is fully located, before applying the power.
Make sure that there is nothing blocking the carriage movement, such as some remnant of paper.

Can't move cassette carriage.

hello savvychris

If you can not get to the carriage motor, can you get to the one of the gears attached to the motor or the carriage gear itself. either of these should allow you to release the carriage.

Can you post some pictures of the carriage, this includes front, top, and side shots? what I am looking for is a way to advance the main motor forwards and thus release the carriage locking system.

If possible, if you have the technical documentation, send me a copy of it, I might be able to figure out what is going on for them.

Thank you,
