Question about Kelvinator Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have an old (35 years) Kelvinator No Frost 480 which seems to be functioning, but not cooling the bottom half of the fridge as it should. The cooling elements seem to freezing up. The fan and compressor appear to be running as they should. The frezzer compartment is very cold.

I hope you got it fixed. These are GREAT fridges. I bought mine 2nd hand in 1979. Still going well.
Your problem is the reverse cycle solenoid. It happened to mine.
It cost me nothing to fix as I had a washing machine water solenoid I could use, but it should only cost a few dollars for parts to buy new. To fit will take about ten minutes. A reputable repairer will know this issue well. If you are a handyman type you can fix it yourself.

Sorry to hear about your problem.

Sounds like you have a defrost issue. Hence your unit is not defrosting. All of this apply's if your freezer side has ice on it. If not. you have other issues, this does sound funny, but this is why your refrigerator side is warm, or not cooling.

Here is a list of some things that can go wrong.
1. Defective heat coil
2. Defective defrost timer
3. Defective defrost sensor
4. Defective Fan
5. Defective compartment inlet damper (on some models)

You should call a service company to resolve your issue.

Since I tried to help you, Please help me and Rate/Vote on the response. Thanks

Kelvinator fridge freezer, fridge too cold frosting at back

Fridges that are less then 10 years old have a lot of POWER. To get rid of the frost, wait until you have eaten most of the food up (maybe a few days), then unplug the fridge and leave the doors open. This will take care of the frost after several hours.

From then on, make sure that when your fridge is full, use a higher setting, and when it is near empty or half way full, use a lower setting. Keeping the freezer at a mid to low setting all the time should be fine, because its usually the fridge part that gives people trouble. You will have to judge on your own which setting is best (i.e you can tell when its good based on how cold the juice is in there, etc).

By adjusting the setting based on the amount of food in your fridge, it should prevent frosting.

Hope that helps!

I have a Kelvinator Opal Fridge/Freezer. The freezer is working fine but the food compartment wont cool. It used to run too cool and freeze stuff on the top shelf. The fridge seals are fine, the fan runs...

The vent from the freezer to the fridge can be blocked with frost and is preventing the flow of cool air to the fridge.
This can happen if there is frost build up due to failure of the auto defrost timer.
So please check on the fan section , remove panel and see if there is frost or block, if so check the timer Heater and the thermostat.

DIPLOMAT APP6302 FRIDGE

The no frost fridge has a compartment that collects the water while it keeps defrosting on a time cycle. I presume that the tray is clogged and full. you will need to access the rear to see to this. Also try to reduce the cooling on the thermostat, reduce the times you are keeping the door open. all of his will only create more frost into the coils to be defrosted. Please also see that the cooling/blowing fans in the freezer are not blocked, allow space for the air flow. Helpful I guess. Good day
