Question about GE GTS18FBRWW Top Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

GE Model 18FBSARWW stopped working. Light comes on, but that's all, with both freezer and refrig compartments room temperature. Most likely cause?

Thanks for your prelim analysis. I should have added that the unit makes no noise of any kind.
Nothing seems to be running; would loss of refrigerant shut everything down?

    Thanks

The most likely cause of this phenomenom is the gas leakage from the compressor. When there is a leakage somewhere along the lines of the unit the leakage will give the gas which is contained in the compressor when this happens the refrigerator and the freezer will remain at room temperature because the gas is responsible for the cooling in the unit.
The solution to this is to simply get a repair technician to help trace the freeze lines and determine where the leakage is from block the leakage and fill in fresh gas inside the unit.
Once this is done the unit will work perfectly. Although do ensure the repair technician does a proper job because most likely there should be more than one leakage as is always the case.
Hope this solution has been helpful?

Yes loss of refrigerant stops all noise. Usually the noise you hear is always as a result of the refrigerant circulation round the unit and in the compressor. But once the refrigerant is out then the circulation is practically non existent and therefore no noise will emit from the unit. Feel free to request further clarifications.

The freezer part keeps freezing up but the refrigator side is too warm

Several things to look at. first make sure you defrost the freezer fully, (you can use a
hair dryer to defrost the coils behind the back panel of the freezer).
Then I would
replace the "defrost termination thermostat" It is clipped onto a tube and has two wires
going to it, this is an inexpensive part that often causes this failure. Model and serial
number is inside the big door usually on the left side.
Also make sure the fan operates in the freezer compartment, as well as setting the
knob in the freezer to the center and not "COLDER"-- this knob blocks off air flow to the lower compartment if set to "COLDER" and can cause freeze up.

Rotate defrost timer until you hear a click and listen for water dripping in
freezer or a hissing as the element heats up. Defrost timer is accessed by a hole under the temperature control panel that has no screw in it in the lower compartment. Rotate the timer manually with a flat screwdriver until it clicks. They sometimes stick.
Hope this solves the problem.

Will freezer work in low ambient temperature (i.e. 26'F)? I have a GE refrigerator/freezer (c. 1983) in a cabin which gets winter temps around 25 degrees. I found the freezer contents had melted and then...

The compressors are rated for ambient temp. and most refrigerator compressors are rated for abour 50 degrees F

to answere your question yes the ambient temp is a problem.

And as for the Thawing, the refrigerator will go into defrost every 8 to 10 hrs and turn on the heater inside the freezer for about 30 min.

You can also cause damage to the seal system and the compressor because the oil will become slugish inside the compressor.

In other resarch I found that because of the ambient temp the freon gas (mostly the newer freon's) won't work corectly because they stay in liqued form.

Your refrig light switch does control the freezer fan and the refrig light bulb . Replace the refrig light switch .
Open the refrig door , freezer fan goes off and the refrig light comes on .

Water dispenser doesnt work, ice dispenser works fine

1) remove the tubing connector behind refrig kickplate . Press for water . If no water comes from tube under refrig , then possibly frozen tank but probably not . Probably bad water inlet valve . ( tank is in the lower potrion of the refrig section behind the crispers ) .
2) if water does shoot out , then your freezer door is frozen which requires leaving door open and tapeing light switch closed and tape plastic around freezer section opening so fridge will continue to operate normally . Thawing freezer door could take a day or 2 . 3) You can plug the hoses back togather and walk by occasionally pressing water untill comes out . Lower your freezer temperature setting also ( could be set for too cold)

Our 4 year old GE side by side frig suddenly warmed to 64 degrees. Freezer stopped freezing and is at 43. Motor is running.

Really need to know what motor(s) are running (compressor, evap fan inside freezer compartment, condenser fan under fridge)?? Of course, check your temperature (thermostat) settings. Side-by-sides usually have 2 of them. They should be labled for refridgerator and freezer. The freezer control usually only opens a baffle from the freezer compartment to the refridge compartment. The refrigerator temp control is the one that controls the compressor on-off cycles and the temp of refrig compartment (this keeps the refrig compartment from freezing the milk and cokes) If the freezer control/baffle is set too far open, this will cause the refrig temp control to shut off too soon for the freezer temp to get low enough. These controls can get bumped out of the correct setting accidently from time to time.
To check the following, the fridge has to be running, or in a condition where it "should be" running: If compressor is running (condenser fan should be too), check if evaporator fan (inside freezer) is running. Open (freezer) door and hold door light switch in when you check evaporator fan operation (some fans stop when door is open) If it is not running you may have a bad evaporator fan motor. It could also be a bad defrost timer, causing the evaporator (also inside back of freezer) to ice-up. This blocks the air flow over evap. Also, there is a defrost terminator switch on the evaporator coil that stops the defrost cycle when coil is clear of ice/frost (but timer hasn't ended defrost cycle). If it is defective, that could also keep the fridge from going into the defrost cycle, or taking it out too soon. If it is the timer, change the defrost terminator as well. Depending on how handy you are, you may be able to check/change any of these parts yourself. If you don't know much about elecrical stuff, you should leave it to a repair tech. Hope this helps.

The freezer stops working when the room temp drops below 60

Refrigerator operation is controlled by the internal temperature . When there is very little ambient heat available to leak in to cause it to cycle more frequently and there is no door traffic to be a heat source the freezer temperature will increase. Keep the room heated to a higher temperature or remove frozen products is the answer. A small chest type freezer will keep food frozen while you are away and have the heat turned down.

Temperature 94 in refrig. normal in freezer

Check to see if refrigerator door is lower than freezer door. If so remove toe panel, (bottom front). Under refrigerator door hinge at bottom right is adjuster for door. Adjust upward so door is even. On some models when door is too low it causes light to stay on some times, raising ref. temps.
