Question about GPS

3 Answers

Hi, I have a volvo 740 made in belgium 1991 model. The speedomete spent a few months fluctuating wildly, sometimes working well, sometimes not at all, sometimes stuck on 140 km per hour. The odometer seemed to work when the speedometer was working. Since compulsory vehicle inspection is coming up, I pulled the whole instrument panel apart looking for loose wires etc and now it is all put together again I find that the odometer is working, but not the speedo. This seems to suggest that the diff sensor and the wiring is ok, but there is trouble in the speedo. I would greatly appreciate any ideas All the best and happy new year, Jeffrey

    Hi dj,

    Thankyou for your reply.

The only problem here is that the odo does work, and I presume (perhaps wrongly) that both speedo and odo get the same signal from the diff sensor. I notice, however, that the connector on the back of the instrument panel has 4 pins, which might suggest that there are two separate feeds.

    any ideas?

    Hi,

I am a bit disappointed with your diagnosis since I wrote ". . . now it is all put together again I find that the odometer is working, but not the speedo. . ." which seems to imply that the sensor in the diff is working, I will apply for a new expert.

    Happy new year,

    Jeffrey

    Hi,

The previous respondent [dj_relly999] obviously did not read the question very well since the fact that the odo works and not the speedo would seem to imply that the diff sensor is good. I think I need someone who has actual knowledge of volvo speedometers (which seem to be somewhat notrious for their unreliability, and might therefore generate extensive knowledge of their faults!).

    All the best,

    Jeffrey

A wildly fluctuating speedo is caused by the drive cable is rusty.

There are two solutions;

1) Remove drive cable. I expect you to find that the cable will not rotate easily. This can be solved by pouring oil between the inner and outer cable until it comes out of the other end; Let all the excess oil drain out and re-fit cable.

2) Remove drive cable and replace with a new one.

The odometer will be correct, since it counts the revolutions of the speedo cable, which do not change provided that the cable does not break.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!
I suspect that the speed sensor in the differential is faulty. There's no way that the speed needle will be stucked. Since it did fluctuates before the speed needle died then it's definitely a speed sensor problem. Have the speed sensor replaced and you'll be good.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one and Happy New Year!

There should be a speedo sensor on the transmission somewhere. I don't know exactly where it is located. I believe your speedo is all electrical so the sensor on the transmission sends a signal to the speedo head. You can go onto some parts stores websites and see if one is listed for it, if it is, I would try replacing that first. I don't think the part should be more then $50 or $60 but you never know with Volvo. Good luck.

Timing for a 1991 volvo 740

Hi, this is how to align timing on a 1991 Volvo 740.
There are marks for all three. Cam and Aux shafts have dots on face of outer gear. Cam lines up with mark on rear timing cover(about 1 o'clock). Aux lines up with mark on seal housing (about 3 o'clock) and crank lines up with mark on seal housing (about 12 o'clock).

Take care

Where is the fuse box located on a volvo 740 1991 model

on the 1991 740 the fuse box is located behind the black ashtray, unless you have a 740se, in which case it can be located on the side near the door, like in the 760turbo and 780bertone turbo. good luck :)

the odometer part of the speedometer has more than likely broken, or is just work out. you can't replace just that part of it either, you'll need to look around or search google for a replacement speedometer. bear in mind that some laws come into play when replacing the speedometer / odometer on a vehicle as well.

Speedometer erratic/intermittent

I don't know what is causing this problem, but I know phil140701's answer is completely wrong on two counts. First, 740 Volvos starting at least in 1986 have electronic speedometers and no cable. There is an electronic sensor on the differential which sends a signal to the speedometer cluster. Second, if it were strictly mechanical with a cable then the voltage regulator could have no effect on it at all.
