Question about HP Photosmart Premium C309A All-In-One Printer

Open Question

I have a HP Photosmart C309. I want to scan something to my computer. When I choose scan to computer I get the following error message: "try starting scan from computer. Refer to documentation for details." I have powered off the maching. Used the set up wizard to make sure the network was set up and recognized. I am able to scan to a USB drive but want to be able to scan directly to my computer. Please advise. Thanks Tami

The most common causes of this issue are 1: you do not have the software installed on your computer (or you need an updated version form the HP web-site) and/or 2: you are connecting to the printer over a network and your firewall is stopping the printer from accessing the HP software on your computer. A little more info would be helpful in diagnosing the problem; What Operating System is your computer running? Is your computer connected to the printer via USB or over a network? Do you have the latest HP software installed? Do you have more than one printer, scanner or all in one device connected to your computer? Has the printer always had this problem or has it worked before?

I had the same problem and this is what I did to fix it.

Go to control panel
choose printers
look to left and find scanners and cameras
click scanner
a pop up should direct you to scanning options and will lead your scanner to scan the item

hope this helps

I keep getting this message every time I want to scan something to my computer. "Scan Problem: Try Starting scan from computer. Refer to documentation for details."

Go to printers and Faxes in Control Panel Right Click the Printer, Select Properties Select Ports from the top tabs and make sure "Enable Bi-Directional Support" is selected.
Also check the HP ImageZone software settings to make sure the computer knows what to do when you scan directly.
This message is usually caused because the printer can not talk to the PC or does not know what to do with the scan.

Since you have problem loading driver using the setup disc that came with the printer, there's a chance here that some part of the installation disc are corrupted so it will be better if you use the printer software from HP web site, download it from this link.

Connection issue between XP Pro and HP C6180 all-in-one

Hi Lynn,

Unfortunately, HP.com doesn't have a very satisfying online solution to your problem. Still, there are a few things you can try.

The first is a general diagnostic check of your scanner. HP provides a doc that takes you through some steps, many of which you probably already tried, to see if it's a simple fix:

An error occurred while communicating with scanning device

The next document is a set of diagnostic steps to address errors trying to scan to a PDF:

An error occurred while trying to scan to a PDF

I don't know if the current situation was created by a fault in the device or some recent change in your configuration settings. I do know you can use the HP Director software installed on your computer to set the scan destination settings:

Settting "Scan To" Destination using HP Director

Those were the most relevant solutions I could find for you. I hope some of this information is helpful. Good luck.
