Question about Dishwashers

Open Question

My new Euro dishwasher makes grinding noises during some of the cycles. It sounds like a garbage disposal grinder and is very unnerving! Is this normal?

FYI... I followed Miss Midget's steps... and there it was... a piece of plastic... actually one of the end caps from the rack. Poor design if you ask me. So for all you "grinders" out there, it's an easy fix... just need the appropriate star screwdriver. It went back together easier than it did taking it apart. Thanks.

SOURCE: How to knock out garbage disposal plug

Turn off the power source to the garbage disposal. Take the drain hose from the dishwasher off the connector going to the disposal (if connected). Insert a flat blade screwdriver in the drain hose fitting and tap a few times with a hammer. The plastic plug will pop off inside the garbage disposal. Reach inside from the top of the disposal to retrieve the plastic plug. Sometimes you have to use a little force to tap the plug out. Hope this helps you.

SOURCE: Kenmore Ultrawash Quiet Guard 5 making buzzing/grinding noise

I have a very similar dishwasher, with a very similar problem. I fixed it by removing debris from the water evacuator pump located towards the front of the bottom of the machine (the last motor before the drain hose. In my case, grape stems had clogged it up. Once emptied, it purrs once again. NOTE: don't disassemble the motor, just flush it out, there is an o-ring gasket that is a bear to re-install.

Garbage disposal makes loud noise, nothing stuck, blades turn freely

Bearings in the motor are worn enough to allow the grinder plate to rub against the side of the chamber.

Check to make sure you removed the plug inside the garbage disposal inlet where the dishwasher drain hose connects. This is a common mistake installers make when installing a new garbage disposal. Make sure the power the the disposal is secured and remove the drain hose. Place your finger inside the inlet on the side of the disposal. The opening should be clear. If not, you simply need to insert a flat blade scewdriver through the inlet connection and tap out the plug with a hammer. The plug will pop out inside the disposal, so you will need to reach inside and retrieve it before attempting to use it. Once the plug is removed, reinstall the drain line and test operate your dishwasher by starting a cycle. Once the dishwasher fills and begins the wash cycle, press the STOP/CANCEL button to initiate a drain cycle. Your dishwasher should drain with no problems. If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

Have you recently installed a garbage disposal? If so, you probably didn't knock out the plug where the drain hose from the dishwasher attaches to. Just disconnect the hose from the garbage disposal, use a punch or screwdriver and tap it out with a hammer. (Don't forget to remove the plug from the grinder area) Then reconnect the hose.

LG Dishwasher making grinding noise then blinking E1 code 10 minutes later

Well done by resolving this problem. The other way to avoid the siphoning problem through the drain hose is adding an air gap valve/connector (available at any hardware store). You can use it even if you don't have a garbage disposal in your kitchen sink. That will assure that you have the proper height of the drain hose.
Hope this helps!

New Garbage disposal, washing machine and dishwasher won't work.

Does not sound like these problems are directly related to the disposer. Grinding sound is most likely the impeller on the washer's pump. The washer gets to the first pump out and is unable to pump due to bad impeller or an obstruction. Bad impeller means replace pump motor. (not very hard) Check water supply to dishwasher. Valve turned off or line kinked? Filter screen at solonoid valve plugged?
