Question about Dewalt D51844 Framing Nailer

1 Answer

Dewalt Nail Gun D51844. Same problem as other guy - air blowing out with trigger off. Taking it apart, not sure the cylinder comes off, seems to be held in by a hard plastic housing - called a Bulkhead. How do I get the cylinder out to check for damage?

To take the cylinder out, remove the back cover. Once the cover is off, just grab the metal part of the cylinder and pull. You may have to wiggle it, but it will come out.

Dewalt uses about 4 or 5 orings within the gun made of semi clear urethane that fail (turn gummy and breake apart). Two are under the bulkhead and at least two in the trigger valve. To remove the bulkhead pull up on the white housing. With housing and cylinder assembly out, push down on the black retainer at the very bottom and remove the oring(take a picture of the assembly after each stage so that you can re-assemble the spring and checkvalve correctly). You will find two large orings under the bulkhead against the cylinder that need to be replaced (also the orings in the trigger, or replace the trigger valve ).

Put air on my D51844 it starts firing nail out i have not touch the trigger what is the problem danger

Dewalt uses a combination buna and vinyl orings. The vinyl orings in their nailers fail by turning into putty. To fix your problem replace the trigger valve or the vinyl orings within. You will meed three orings in the trigger valve, (buna 70) , two rings are 2mm and one is 6mm. Within the body of the gun there are 5 more vinyl orings that fail. The rebuild kit has some vinyl orings and will most likely fail also. Convert to buna for longer life. Good luck

My D51822 Type 1 dewalt nail gun blows air out at the nose took it apart and cleaned the junk out of it, put it back together still leaks and now it rapid fires like a machine gun

Needs rebuild kit or if you have a source for orings just replace all the vinyl (gold /yellow/clear in color) with buna or black orings. There are two vinyl orings in the trigger valve (metal stem) that fail and cause machine gun effect or replace trigger valve complete. Air out the nose indicates weak oring contact between the body of the gun and the white plastic cylinder spacer and also the cylinder spacer and the cylinder. I suspect the orings between the cylinder spacer and the cylinder (actually installed on the cylinder) . Good luck

Dewalt D51822 nail gun does not fire nail. When trigger is pulled air can be felt coming from the trigger area. I have replaced the trigger valve assembly and it had no effect. Gun is about 3 years old...

There are 4 orings that cause this problem. Two are in the trigger valve installed on the firing pin. The firing pin can be seen just under the trigger, however if you replaced the valve, you could assume no problems with the trigger valve. I would take apart the old trigger valve and examine the orings on the pin. The pin should fit snugly in the trigger valve cap and also in the valve. If the orings look good and it does fit snugly, most likely valve is still good. The other two orings to suspect are installed on the cylinder inside the nailer and make contact with the bulkhead (white plastic piece that seals the cylinder note parts reference 55, 74, 11 on the parts list). For parts list and to order parts go to www.toolpartsdirect.com Good luck with your repair.

Air escape from niddle

Air leaking from middle section of the gun.

Most likely the orings between the cylinder and cylinder spacer and orings sealing the cylinder spacer to the body. The cylinder spacer is the white plastic piece visable when you pull off the head. Order the oring kit and replace all the orings in the lower part of the gun. Dewalt used some vinyl orings on the cylinder that failed. The trigger also has orings that will fail. Good idea to order a trigger valve and have it ready( or replace now if the gun is several years old). Good luck and post again if you have question about this gun.

Air leaks out where nail comes out , dewalt air hammer

Dewalt nailers have some orings made of vinyl in critical sealing areas that failed due to oil/water in the supply air. One indication of failed cylinder seal orings is leak out of nose. You could replace the individual orings or order oring kit #610773.01 from dewalt service center or on line at www.toolpartsdirect.com. Second option is to take gun to a fastener outlet that also repairs the popular brands of nailers and ask them to match orings with better viton type seals instead of vinyl. If you are handyman type, pull parts out of gun and take worn orings (and parts) to bearing dealer and they will measure your seals and sell you some oring lube. Good holiday

My Dewalt D51844 nail gun blows air out the nose with trigger off.

Dewalt uses two vinyl orings against the cylinder spacer seal. Most likely one or both have have failed. These orings are included in the repair kit available thru dewalt service center near you or on the web. If you have a source for orings, like a bearing retailer, you could replace with generic viton orings. Take cylinder and cylinder spacer with you so that you can fit them in. The orings should allow cylinder spacer to fit snuggly and allow the spacer to have about a 1/4 in travel without jamming. If a kit is not available, then only option is to convert to generic orings. Good holidays

On the trigger of my Bostich Spiral load nail gun AND my Bostick trim nail gun air is leaking profusely from the trigger. Nail guns were not in use for about a year. When I first used them this weekend,...

A nail gun works on compressed air.
When you hook the air hose to the gun it fills a cylinder with air pressure.
When you pull the trigger. the cylinder pressure is released onto a firing pin that shoots the nail.
The air pressure line is also connected to the trigger and therefore the trigger has to be sealed.

When ever using a nail gun, you add a bit of gun oil in the back of the gun (not 3-in-1motor oil, it has to be non-detergent gun oil)

If you haven't used the gun in a while, it is best to oil up the gun and let the oil run down into the gun.
If you use anything but gun oil, the seals will give out.

Your trigger seal has given out. It is probably an 'O' ring. You can access it by taking it apart. Look for the O ring.
Bostich makes re-build kits for the different guns that you can buy on-line.
Back when I was in construction, there were several nail gun shops that sold and serviced nail guns, and sold nails to the contractors. I don't know if that business model is still active or if you have to send the guns to Bostich service center.

D51844 Framing Nailer won't fire

Adjusting the depth of the nail also changes the amount of pressure that is applied to the trigger pin. This is not actually a problem with the adjustment, however indicates that the orings in the gun are not completely sealing or is lacking lubricant. Adjust depth so that maximum pressure is asserted against the trigger pin. The trigger pin must be pushed all the way in very quickly to fire the gun. Test by removing the trigger and depressing the trigger pin by hand all the way in quickly. Enjoy
