Question about Epson Stylus CX4800 All-In-One InkJet Printer

5 Answers

I have an Epson cx4800. When I now try to copy something, I get horizontal banding and some print/font lines darker and slightly blurry. A solid border, running from top to bottom of page has bands. In both b&w and color versions. The document came to me as a PDF. When I print the electronic version, no problem. Other test documents have the same copy problem. No problem with printing other pages from a file, just with copying.... Please advise.

Problem report showed up only recently, after years of trouble-free use. I suspect a problem in some part of the printer NOT having to do with printing from an electronic file. Is is the image sensor not working properly? What accounts for the precise banding down the page when copying? It's not the ink supply....

Sorry, not helpful: Various paragraphs are off the mark. Did a live person read the problem description? (Note, this printer does not have a LCD screen. I wonder if the expert know this machine, or just Epsons generally.) I wish I knew what goes wrong (problem source) when this happens but does not affect printing from a document or webpage. Are you sure this is an ink problem?

Please review my problem and advise. Thx.

    Cleaned glass, No change.

  • A. L. Jan 12, 2011

This is mysterious and frustrating. Does the reading mechanism have a rotating part that might cause the horizontal banding (all the way down the page)?

    I have provided details already.

It seems that the copier portion of the drivers are not installed properly. Please uninstall the drivers and reinstall as per the link below:

Usually copiers use toners to transfer images from one document to the other. Most copy problems are as a result of a low level in the toner in the system or the toner being unevenly distributed in the system. When the toner is more than expected in one part it brings about bands and when it is just sufficient the print comes out just as it is supposed to finally when it is not enough in one part the prints come out blurry..
All three symptoms can be seen in your copied documents. Regardless of the integrated nature of the unit the document printing goes through different procedures thats why the printing has no problem and copying is affected.
Simply get the toner pack replaced and the problem will be sorted out.
Hope this solution has been helpful?

I suggest you clean the flat bed scanner glass using a lint clothe and windex. Examine closely the glass, remove dirt, stained or dried ink.

That should fix it.

Hello

Make sure you are using a compatible paper type and that the Media Type setting matches the paper you loaded. Let the driver automatically set the print settings for the paper type. Verify that the printable side of the paper is face up in the sheet feeder. It's usually whiter or shinier.

If you see banding when you print, but not when you copy, try using Automatic mode. Make sure you're not using the Maximum Printable Area setting. Banding may occur in the expanded area.

Check the ink levels to make sure that you're not low on ink. If your ink cartridge is more than six months old, you may need to replace it.

Run a nozzle check to confirm the print head nozzles are clean. Make sure paper is loaded, press a Menu button until you see Nozzle Check on the LCD screen, and press the Color Copy button. The nozzle check pattern prints.

If the pattern has any gaps as shown below, follow these steps to clean the print head.

1. Make sure the EPSON printer is turned on but not printing, and the Error light is off. (If the Error light is flashing or on, you may need to replace an ink cartridge.)

2.Press a Menu button until you see Head Cleaning on the LCD screen.

3. Press the Color Copy button,Cleaning takes about 30 seconds, during which the printer makes some noise and the On light flashes briefly.

Caution: Never turn off the printer while the On light is flashing, unless the printer hasn't moved or made noise for more than 5 minutes.

If you don't see any improvement after cleaning three or four times, check the solutions in the Problems and Solutions section of your printer basics manual. You can also turn the printer off and wait overnight - this allows any dried ink to soften - and then try cleaning the print head again.

Caution: When you don t turn on your printer for a long time, the print quality can decline. It s a good idea to turn on your printer at least once a month to maintain good print quality.

Run a Printer Check

Run a printer check to determine whether the problem comes from the Epson Stylus CX itself or some other source.

Make sure both the Epson Stylus CX and computer are turned off. Then disconnect the USB cable from the Epson Stylus CX.

Make sure letter-size plain paper is loaded in the Epson Stylus CX.

Press the ink and On buttons together and hold them down for about 5 seconds. The Epson Stylus CX turns on and prints a test pattern. It also shows the percentage of ink left in each cartridge:

Turn off the Epson Stylus CX after it prints the test page. Then reconnect the USB cable and turn on the Epson Stylus CX and computer.
??¦ If the test page prints correctly, the problem probably lies in your software settings, the USB cable, or your computer. It's also possible that your software may not be installed correctly. You should check to see if you have the most current driver for your printer and operating system. Updated drivers and utilities can be downloaded here. Use your Start Here sheet for instructions on reinstalling the Epson Stylus CX software.

??¦ If the test page doesn't print correctly, you may have a problem with the Epson Stylus CX. Try the suggestions in the Problems and Solutions section of your User Guide. As you seem to only have problems when copying I would suggest you check the the default settings for all windows programs as there may be different setting for the copy program, i.e. paper size..

When you change the printer settings within a program, they apply only to that program. If you want to change the default printer settings for all your programs, follow these steps:

Right-click the printer icon in the lower right corner of your screen (taskbar) or open from the printer menu.

Select Printer Settings.

Select the default settings you want for all your applications, then click OK.

You can still change the printer settings in your individual programs, when necessary. They will override the Windows default settings until the next time you turn on or reset your computer.

Trust this is helpful.

HEAD CLEANING DOES NOT FIX GAPS IN NOZZLE CHECK

Head cleaning is for fixing horizontal band. If some point of head cloged, print out will show horizoantal banding. For vertical banding, try using head alignment. Have yo tried printing without high speed (disable high speed option)

Horzontal white lines cut through print and picture copies. When doing head allignment the horozontal bars all have a white gap, 1 through 7. Epson Stylus CX5400

You don't need to do head alignment, because it is for vertical banding in printout. Vertical banding can be minimized by disabling high speed option without doing head alignment. If your printout have horizontal white lines, do check nozzle and head cleaning, or you can minimize white lines by printing in best quality (photo).

Epson Stylus r220 prints with white lines... i installed a CIS and it worked fine for about 6 months, now i'm getting prints with white lines (or fine spots) i tried nozzle check, which comes out good......

Nozzle check must perfect for perfect output. There are tranversal lines at vertical straight lines that represent same point of head micro piezo. If tranversal lines no clog at all, but vertical straight lines not perfectly straight, the result not good (like horizontal white banding). Check it? Head aligment is for vertical banding. If your result is horizontal banding, you don't need to realign head. It's caused by some residual at the output of head sprayer. So, the spray of ink not straight to paper. Try to print with photo/best photo.

Do a nozzle check and determine if a head cleaning is required. I'm betting that a couple of headcleanings will solve the problem.

I had the same problem too.  I went to the Epson website and they gave instructions to shake the cartridge 4-5 times prior to installing.   It worked!!!  I tried alot of things before I saw that I needed to shake the cartridge.  Definitely give this a try if you haven't already.
