I suspect that you didnt install any driver for it ..and this may cause the issue..This is not a plug and play device and need a driver to work ..If you do not have a driver for mac on the disk here is something that may work ..download it ..and run it ..and after that try to configure from the software ..It may be needed to lower the resolution to a max of 1360/768...but for a normal 19 inch monitor ..it will be enough 1152/864 ..this will be the best choice ..
