Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

My Toshiba 26HL67 will not power on. Instead, I get a yellow light that flashes three times, pauses, then flashes 3 times ad infinitum. I have read that getting firmware update 2007SEN069 may fix the problem, however, I cannot find this firmware update to download. Any suggestions would be most appreciative. Thanks, Braden Rupe

Thanks for the feed back. I have repaired a Mitsubishi 55" DLP with blown capacitors, in that case the capacitors were very easy to spot (busted tops with leakage). On this board, there are a couple that are a 'bit' raised, but nowhere near what I would call 'bulged', at least to a degree that is obvious. Can a capacitor be blown even though the bulge is small?

Thanks again for your help, much appreciated.

  • rupe_braden Jan 22, 2011

The bulged capacitors on the power board are very large, brown capacitors listed as 200 v 560 uf(M). There are two of them on the board and both are slightly bulged. The only other bulged one I see is a 2200uf 16V. Should I replace all 3 or stick with the 2200uf 16V. I do not understand the purpose of the very large wide brown capacitors on the board. Thanks for your time and help.

Hello,

The issue you describe is consistent with a power supply board issue I don't think firmware update will fix this as this is a power problem. Also, how do you intend to update the TV's firmware when it would not power on?

The problem should be from the power board of the TV. This is the board where the AC goes to. This problem may have occurred as a result of irregular power supply, or excess power supply or power surge.

The TV is receiving current but cannot circulate or transfer the current to other necessary part of the TV because of the defective power supply board.

I do not think it needs replacement, rather some defective capacitors are causing this issue.
Open unit up and take a look at the power supply board. You will probably see one or more electrolytic filter capacitors that are bulged up in the top-not perfectly flat like the others.

The value of these capacitors will be different, most likely they will be somewhere around-820 to 2200uF/25 V( or /10V sometimes)

You can replace them with same values but I would recommend the voltage rating to be higher(like 35V for an original 25V) for reliability purposes.

What happens is,these bulged top capacitors will cause a low and unfiltered DC voltage=main board will malfunction(the relay will keep clicking until the caps are holding enough charge to bring the voltage up over a threshold point).

You can buy these capacitors at any Fry's or Radioshack store or you can order them online at vendors like "mcmelectronics.com"(look for electrolytic capacitors).
After replacing these capacitor(capacitors) most likely the normal operation will be restored.

Note: There may be also some other causes for this symptom ,like a defective T con board ,or main board, but the bulged top capacitors are the most common cause for this issue.

If you don't know about TV repairers, take the TV to the nearest repairman to fix the fault for you. Also, note that TV stores a lot of current, so wait a while before opening the TV back cover.

I hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for your reply. The answer to your question is "YES". A capacitor can be defective eeven though its bulge is small.

    Good luck.

How do i determine if my ballast board or capacitor is bad in my toshiba hd tv model no 57HM167?

The chances of the ballast failing are small on this model. Count how many times the Yellow light flashes before it pauses. Then google 57HM167 and the amount of blinks. ie " 57HM167 Yellow light flashes 3 times" That will tell you what you need to know. You can also post it here and we can help. I suspect you have a stuck fan(the fans are monitored to see if they are spinning. If not, they will not allow the TV to start up). Or you have the cover for the lamp not installed all the way. There is a switch that the lamp cover activates and the the TV will not turn on without it secured.

What does a flashing yellow light mean on the joystick? the light looks like the shape of a wrench.

Hi Judy,

According to Pride's troubleshooting documents the service indicator (wrench icon) will flash when a fault is detected by the dynamic controller.

The number of flashes, followed by a 2 second pause, indicates the issue. You will need to count the flashes to determine the cause and a possible solution.

I have typed the flash codes below, but you can also see them on a larger table here: http://www.fixya.com/support/p3641679-pride_jazzy_614_hd_jazzy_614hd/usermanual-6B42026-pdf

FLASH CODES
Code #1
  • Flash Code: One, pause, one
  • Cause: Possible Stall Timeout
  • Possible Solution: Turn joystick off, then on.

What's your problem? won't turn on..... yellow/orange light continually flashes three times...

Toshiba Regza 37in - 37HL17
TV will not turn on - Yellow power ind. Light blinks three times...
Fixed with a firmware update (hard to believe, but true). Search Google for a file named: 2007SEN069.zip (don't worry if the page you find it on doesn't mention the 37HL17 - it worked fine). Unzip the file, and copy the 3 folders and 3 files to the root of a small SD card. The SD card MUST be 2GB or less in size (I used a 1GB card), and it MUST be formatted with FAT-16 (not FAT-32). Mine was pre-formatted as FAT (FAT-16). The SD port is on the back of the TV behind a cover plate near the power cable. You do NOT need to remove the back cover of the TV, just the small cover plate (1 screw). UNPLUG the TV; remove the cover plate; insert the SD card (prepped as explained above); Plug in the TV; Watch the yellow lights blink, then turn blue, then go dark; UNPLUG the TV; remove the SD Card and replace the cover; Plug in the TV; Yellow lights will blink a few times (this is normal); when blinking stops, turn on the TV and you should be good to go. :-)
Pictures attached are from a Toshiba software upgrade bulletin I found online.

Computer shut down and red light flashing five times then three second pause and repeats

According to the troubleshooting guide for this model, the red light flashing five times indicates a problem in the RAM (memory), before the video subsystem is ready. You may just need to open the case and make sure the memory sticks are fully locked in their slots. If you just added new memory, it might not match the required specs.

Blank screen and the power LED flashes Red five times, once every second, followed by a two second pause, and the computer beeps five times. (Beeps stop after fifth iteration but LEDs continue flashing.)

Cause Pre-video memory error.

Solution
1.
Reseat DIMMs. Power on the system.

2. Replace DIMMs one at a time to isolate the faulty module.

3. Replace third-party memory with HP memory.
4. Replace the system board.

I have a toshiba 42HL167. Love it but recently when the power is off iget a repeating blinking yellow light. Blinks 3 times pauses blinks 3 time pauses blinks either 2 or 3 times then stops for 25 seconds...

Yes. The Yellow LED blinking 3 times is a normal boot-up, but if it keeps doing it -- it needs the firmware "update" (which is more like a reload because it got corrupted.) The problem is, no one talks about how to do that. (there is a PDF and firmware on toshiba's website, but it lacks some crucial details.)

My friend gave me his 42HL167 after this problem started after a power event during a storm and I managed to fix it by reloading the firmware.

I posted instructions on my website at:

http://www.benjammin.net/www/pages/techtips/Toshiba-Regza-42HL167.html

Once I figured out some of the facts, it was a breeze...

1. Try resetting the TV by disconnecting the power for 30 seconds and then plugging it back in. If this has no
effect, try moving the TV to a different power outlet that has been tested and is known to be good.
2. If your unit continues to fail, please contact our Customer Solutions Department at 1-800-631-3811 Monday
