Question about HP Pavilion a450n PC Desktop

1 Answer

PC runs great until you power completely off. The it will take several tries of power on attempts. It will not start with the CPU fan coming on high speed. Must keep trying until low speed is heard. I have removed reseated the CPU as HP recommended, new heat grease, cleaned heat sink, inspect fan etc. The measured CPU temperature is 60C or 140F even during heavy CPU loads. Rarely runs the high speed fan except when I try to turn it off and then back on later. The CPU is running a the nominal 3.0GHz. Love the speed of this machine.

Sounds like a problem with the power supply based on what you've written. Could be motherboard too, but Power Supply is usually the culprit.

I'd swap it out to test ;)

PC won't start up

It may be worth trying to re apply the thermal paste to the processor, make sure you remove power from the machine before you open it up. The CPU may have failed, but they don't fail very often, so try the paste first, it will only cost a few GBP for a couple of applications.

I hit the power button and the light blinks once, the fans will start to spin, and then nothing, no power no boot, just a quick blip of power but no power up..

You need to remove the case top and look for a lot of Dust all over the inside, especially around the CPU making sure the cpu fan is still running. This can get expensive when maintenance procedures are not thought of until late. It's not you it's everyone. With the power cord out, maybe you have a vacuuum attachment to get in there and get rid of a lot of spider webs. Then take a slightly moistened rag and complete the job. I can't guarantee your CPU fan is still alive but when you get all cleaning utensils out of the way, put the power switch on and watch for the CPU fan to spin. If not- any lights? P.S. Fan?

My cooling fan on my mother board start making noise now as soon as you power up the pc it shuts down could it over heat that quickly or did it ruin mother board?

It is possible to burn out a processor in a matter of seconds without cooling. Please do not attempt to restart the unit, until you replace the colling fan on the processor. If it's not the processor fan/heatsink, you may have lucked out, but don't restart it till you replace the fans. The fan that sits on your cpu is the main concern, if it's one of the others the board should shut down automatically in order to stop this scenario from occuring.

Loud "jet engine taking off" type sound

If you changed out the power supply then the only other device that could be making that noise is your CPU cooling fan. To be sure, open the case and disconnect the CPU cooling fan plug from the motherbrd (MAKE SURE POWER IS OFF) and see if the noise stops. Don’t worry about the “Fan Failure Error” when you turn on the computer. Just hit F1 to continue. Don’t leave the computer running without the fan plugged in longer then necessary. After tying this procedure, please contact me for further diagnosis.

Computer STartup Problem

That is an impressive wait. You must be an OR LP to have tolerated that battery manipulation; hopefully the surgeons aren't up nights over the 3 lost insulated forceps.... It sounds as though the system is dissatisfied with the CPU fan speed or another power/cooling interface component (CPU over 90 centigrade, chipset over 95 centigrade, the power supply fan running, etc.) and thus shutting down immediately to protect itself. Do all those things check out, particularly in the BIOS power/cooling section? How about fan and power connections on your videocard being right and jumpered accommodatingly?

That is, you could connect tach fans on any spare 3-4 pin headers and see if favor comes your way. The system will spin them slowly once it boots and you enable automatic CPU/fan control (and power savings) settings.

CPU fan operates but laptop otherwise dead ?

Remove the battery and plug in the power adapter. Attempt to power on the laptop. If nothing happens, then try holding the power cord, at the jack, at a different angle. Wiggle it a little and see if the laptop will come on. If it does come on, then wiggle it some more and see if the laptop cuts off.

This will determine if your DC Jack is faulty. I have resoldered a bunch of these on this model. Usually the solder around the HOT pin on the mainboard cracks. Thus, you don't get a good power connection.

Now, as far as the laptop coming on with the battery.... how long will it run on just the battery? A couple seconds? Or a couple minutes? Or until you turn it off? If the battery were about dead, then it would come on for just a couple seconds but not POST. Meaning no video or anything. But if it comes on and runs for several minutes without turning off, then a weak battery isn't the problem. It should still POST and show video and all that.

So, even if you get the DC Jack fixed, assuming its faulty, this may or may not solve your POST problem. Never know really until the dc jack is for sure supplying good steady power.
