A repair would greatly depend on the damage. In general, a patch applied from the back of the screen is the normal procedure. A firm piece of cloth, i.e. fine woven linen cut to the size of the tear plus one inch on each side, glued from behind with a flexible glue (i.e. Pattex Power Glue Repair Extreme or similar). Do not use one-second industrial glue, you'll need time to adjust the edges.
Make sure any fibers sticking out from the edges of the cut go towards the back of the screen, so the surface looks smooth later. Give enough time to dry.

If you are lucky, the edges of the cut close nicely and become neigh invisible from the front.

If screen material is missing, don't push the edges together, it will only result in bends. Instead use a white professional paper repair putty to fill in (check paper shop with artist's equipment, they are the most likely candidates to find such stuff). You may have to mix in a little paint to match the colour of the screen. Try out first without applying the stuff to the screen, until you get a sufficient match. Apply slightly more putty than needed to close any gaps. Use a fine abrasive paper to smoothen the transitions. If you want a near perfect result, use abrasive paper in a granularity matching the screen's surface to get the same texture. Recommendation: try out exercise on a piece of paper first. This stuff is suited for small repairs only, but does wonders if applied properly. It is normally used to repair damages to valuable books.

If material is missing in more than two or three millimeters in size, I doubt you'll get a completely unnoticeable result, but that cannot be helped.

Can you recommend a brand of paper putty? A quick google search for 'white professional paper repair putty' isn't turning up much.

It's called tearing and it's likely in the HV circuit, possibly the FBT or splitter. Won't go into any greater detail than that, other than to say it's time to call the technician. Voltages in that circuit can make you VERY dead...

Common issue with Philips projections is contaminated cooling fluid in most likely 2 of the 3 CRT's. This will require a technician to clean and refill.

Problem solved.
I had the exact same problem with my Magnavox TV. The screen would shrink then expand. After thrity minutes it would correct itself. Then one day it just broke - no sound and no video. I searched these forums but did not find clear instructions on how to fix it. I gave up and called in a repair tech. He fixed my TV in less than 30 minutes.  To help others like me I documented the fix and created a step by quide and repair kit to fix the problem. You can find it here.

Sounds like a problem in the main power regulator circuit, such as a bad capacitor or regulator IC or transisitor. There are no user serviceable parts inside these sets and every thing is soldered into place. I recomend that you call in a trained service tech to assist you with this repair.
