SOURCE: SD Card Reader won't work?
have you tried other sd cards before or is this the first time?
if you have and its just this time it hasent make sure its working in your camera or mp3 player or where ever it came from :-)
if it works have a look in your device manager to make sure there are no problems with the drivers.
2 control pannel
4 then the hardware tab and click the device manager.
if there are anyproblems there is useually a little symbol next to the device just double click on it and have a look for the error code.
if all else fails try reinstaling the driver for your card reader or find an updated drivr download.
hope this helps

SOURCE: sd card
First you need to see if the computer reconizes the reader, to do this you double click on the computer icon on your desktop, then look to see if there are any drives other than your hard drive and cd roms. If the computer does not see the reader then you may need to download drivers. As to how to get the drivers it depends on your setup if the reader was installed in the computer when you bought it then you will want to go to the computer manfactuer website, if you bought the reader seperatly then you should have recived a disk with it if not go to the website of the card reader manfactuer.
Hope this helps.

the reason its failing is because vista doesn't play well with certain SD cards.
more than likely your SD card does not support 1.8 volts. (Typically, most SD cards use 3.3 volts.) and your comp might be running a 1.8 volt SD host controller.
also this occurs because of a timing issue with the SD host controller. (might be why it works sometimes)
Luckily Microsoft has SILENTLY (typical) released a fix for this problem
you need hot fix 936825...... download it, install it and reboot.
I think this is the link for the page where the fix is (requires validation to make sure you actually own vista)
If not, go here and search for 936825
give this a shot and see what happens first. you could still have it set as an unknown device for some reason (windows sucks)
if the fix doesn't work, kick me an email
good luck! let me know how it turns out,
