Hi my name is wesley. you need to make sure the hard disk you put in is set to slave otherwise it clashes with your other hard disk and will not boot. you will see a jumper on the hard disk you can set to slave instructions is on the hard disk you just have to change witch two pins the jumper is on.

Certain OSs can be installed onto thumb drives, however installing additional software will likely not work. Most laptop harddrives can be replaced, though it is more difficult than a desktop. If you are uncomfortable or unknowledgeable with computer equipment, I suggest visiting a professional to replace the hard drive.

This website gives information on how to boot Windows XP from a USB drive.

http://www.techrepublic.com/article/solutionbase-boot-windows-xp-from-a-usb-flash-drive/5928902

to boot from a drive other than the harddrive, while your computer is turning on, early, before the windows logo appears, there should be an option to press one of the F keys to enter a boot menu. Pay attention to the screen, as it will only appear for a few moments before the windows on the hard drive loads automatically.

Installing a 2 port ATA-133 IDE adapter card to a desktop w/a hard drive & DVD

I don't think you can boot off of the ATA-133 so you will have to boot off of the IDE on the mobo and have the DVD drive jumpered cable select on the 2nd IDE. Boot that way to make sure the system boots. Shut down. Then instll the ATA-133 adapter with NO DRIVES on it and boot. The system should ask you for drivers for the new hardware. Intall the drivers. Shut down. Attach the new drives to the ATA-133. Reboot. You still might have to go into admin in windows and assign drive letters to the new drives. Anyway, if you are trying to boot off of a drive on the ATA-133 adapter, I don't think you can do it. I have mostly used Asus boards with Award Bios and there was no way to point the boot process to an add-on ATA Controller.
