YOU WOULD THINK, Samsung would issue a repair part or warning. My Dishwasher had the same problem.

Check the brackets that hold the top rack for any broken plastic brackets. My dishwasher was making the same noise and after noticing the broken plastic pieces I pulled out the dishwasher put it on its side removed a white panel on the bottom that is attached with two screws, removed the drain line and inside there were two plastic tabs from the broken bracket. Once those were removed the grinding noise stopped. The bracket holding the drain hose can be removed with a pair of pliers.

I wish I knew that earlier.. I've been having that issue intermittently and now my dishwasher hasn't worked in two months.. I'm getting an SE error about a minute after starting the cycle, there is no noises when I turn it on and the cycle stops once I get the SE error. I'm going to attempt what you suggested above right now and let you know if it resolves my issue

Wow I knew it had to be in the pump but I didn't know it was the impeller that pumps the water out...how does that break when we never put any dishes with food in ours? Anyway it's fixed for now! Thanks

Perfect solution and the step-by-step with photos out on http://303lurch.com/?p=164 were super helpful. Found two cherry pits and a piece of plastic in the water pump.

This was a great help!!!! I guess the better question would be why does the dishwasher allow this type of problem to happen? Should there not have been screens to prevent this???

June 12,2011... i think a lot of the issues regarding noise and cleaning issues are related to the water sensor assembly. Small white plastic device on left hand side of dishwasher when pulled out. we had this dishwasher 3 months, the upper plastic clips broke, then the loud grinding noise, - called for warranty repair, in meantime got a code 9E - low water level. Repair man came out, pushed some special sequence of buttons and it never gave him the history of the 9E code coming up, but we ran a cycle and sure enough it came up. Repair man came back 3 weeks later with parts (yes 3 weeks - upper brackets, water sensor assembly and a new bottom tray - as there was a thumping sound). Repair man found some plastic shavings in the water assembly which may have caused the fault in the sensor reading water level. dishwasher fixed, very quiet now, and dishes are super hot to touch after cycle and clean - if you place dinner plates apart - tines are too close.
prior to being fixed - dishes would have a few water dirt stains, and dishes were not completely dry. Now they are dry completely - even the plastic utensil holder handle. I also made sure the drain hose was fastened up high to top of inside cabinet. i still would not recommend this dishwasher - but want to help those of us who are stuck with it !! hopefully this helps.

Perfect advise above. My dishwasher was making the same rattling/grinding sound. Did this and a small piece of plastic came out. Just ran it and it is perfectly quiet again. Thank you!!! Glyn from Texas

I removed the white plate from the bottom of the dishwasher, removed the drain line with a pliers, and found the missing piece of broken gray plastic from the upper dish tray. One of the other plastic tabs holding the tray was also broken and barely hanging on.

Thank You All, especially fultondsan for providing detailed instructions. I Probably would have figured it out but I would just as likely have made it worse first ;-)

Thanks for this thread. I had several tabs break off, but only found one in the discharge pump. That was the source of the noise.

We just had the grinding noise in ours yesterday. I pulled out the dish washer and removed the bottom white plate. I checked the drain hoses and found nothing. You can twist off the purge pump however and lo and behold I found a grey cap that covers the acre holes in the side of the dishwasher inside! That was the source of the grinding as it was hitting the impeller of the purge pump. No damage done. Replaced the hose and plate and everyone is running well now. Beware of small parts getting into the grinder or purge pump of these machines. It seems too easy for thing to get past any filters.

I did all that was described and the SE error persists. I should mention that it's the second time this happens to me. the first time I cleaned the small white plastic device on left hand side of dishwasher as well as the black hose leading to it so I hoped to do the same today ... but it does not help. it seems like the water pump is not being turned on to pump the water out meaning as soon as the white tray is full the dish stops and the SE Error appears.

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!

Loud sounds

Many Frigidaire dishwashers come with the promise of being the "quietest dishwasher in its class," according to Frigidaire. However, a quiet dishwasher doesn't necessarily mean that the dishwasher is silent, as some noises are normal. It can take some troubleshooting at times to determine if a noise coming from the dishwasher is typical or if it indicates a larger problem Listen for the sound of water filling and draining throughout the wash cycle. These sounds are normal and do not indicate an issue.

  • 2 Pay attention to the drain motor, which operates at the beginning of each cycle. This noise should be fairly quiet and should not sound like a loud, grinding or banging sound.
  • 3 Note that the sound will change when the wash cycle moves between the lower and middle spray arms. This sound should be temporary and fairly quiet.
  • 4 Look for hard items in the dishwasher grinder or filter if a loud crunching, buzzing or grinding sound is heard. The dishwasher can typically grind up these items within one or two cycles, but the item may be lifted out and discarded to eliminate the sound.
  • 5 Remove the bottom rack and spray arms from the bottom of the dishwasher if there is a loud noise coming from the dishwasher that does not resolve itself. Look inside for the impeller, which is round and spins. Remove any debris that may be clogging up the impeller or pump.

Making loud noises when washing, nothing is obstructing the top and bottom wash arms and the dishes are clean when the cycle is over.

Is there a chance the dishes are moving when the machine is on? Cound the water jets(spraying the door and sides) be the cause of the noise. Is the sound insulating blanket on the outside of the machine? Try running empty on a shor cycle to help diagnose the problem.

Our LG LDF7920st dishwasher (6 months old)makes a whistling noise

    Hey, consider the float assembly!

We bought this dishwasher and ran it for the last 1 1/2 months and it made a grinding and whistling sound from day one (it's supposed to be nearly silent in its operation). Turns out the drain pump was cutting in while the machine was still filling, thereby emptying the wash tub of any water. Then, when the cycle proceeded to wash, the dumb thing had no water and made a horrible noise. So I had to pitch in at least 2-3 litres of hot water, and then it worked quietly! Had to do this every time there was new water intake.

After working with the repairmen - four visits later, we isolated the float assembly as the problem and they set about replacing the part. Turns out the two parts were markedly different. LG HAD INSTALLED an older model float assembly at the factory and it was the problem. The replacement part was the correct float assembly and things worked perfectly after that - thank goodness. No more babysitting the dishwasher.

Don't let anyone tell you the motor assembly needs replacement. I have seen that cop-out 'fix' all over the web. But use deductive reasoning to find out where the problem is in the cycle, and explore this option first - it's a quicker and cheaper fix than replacing the whole motor assembly.

'Mr. Float' as he is now called works like this:
-expels any residual water in the tub from the last wash
-intakes water for the wash or rinse
-whirs 2-3 times prepping for the cycle
    -begins to wash, quietly
-expels at the end of the wash or rinse.

    He used to:
    -expel residual water
-intake new water for wash or rinse
---drain pump would cut in WHILE still filling
-machine would whir once, realize it didn't have enough water
-perform a brief top-up intake shot
-begin to wash and whistle and GRIND (this is where I would have to add the water)
-expels water from wash or rinse, and start all over again.

It's a good dishwasher and it will work, but the right model parts have to be in place!

LG Dishwasher making grinding noise then blinking E1 code 10 minutes later

Well done by resolving this problem. The other way to avoid the siphoning problem through the drain hose is adding an air gap valve/connector (available at any hardware store). You can use it even if you don't have a garbage disposal in your kitchen sink. That will assure that you have the proper height of the drain hose.
    Hope this helps!
