Question about Dell Studio 15 Laptop

1 Answer

My computer says it does not recognize my battery so will be unable to charge it. I unplugged my adapter for a bit and then plugged it back in. My battery is showing 94% and has not charged to 100% since yesterday when this first happened. I called Dell Tech Support and tried the Bios but that didn't work either.

How old is the battery and is it charged as you use the laptop all of the time because if it is and it's more than 6months old then it could be faulty now due to the chemical reactions.

My laptop is 1 1/2 years old and it's the original battery. The battery is charged all the time as I mostly use the adapter. When I unplugged the adapter the battery went down to 94% and when I plugged it back in, the battery is still showing 94%. When I checked my battery, it says it's performing normally. When I first turn on the computer it says it does not recognize the battery so will be unable to charge.

No wonder Dell suggested to upgrade your BIOS. What makes me wonder is your battery has been OK all this time, what has changed and all I can come up with is a duff cell maybe giving not only the reading of not full eventhough it has been charged and the laptop saying it's not a Dell battery because the voltage is now too low for a "propper " battery.
All I can suggest is a look on ebay for a new battery and see what happens.
    Regards and Happy New Year.

I ordered a new battery off eBay a couple of hours ago. Hopefully that's all it is.
Thank you for your suggestions. :)

Battery not recognised/not charging

Turn the computer off, unplug it, take the battery out. Then hold the power button down for 10 - 15 seconds. Plug the ac adapter back in, but do not put the battery in yet. Boot the computer, then shut it back down. Put the battery back in then boot it again. It should recognize the system now.

Try wiggling the plug around a bit to see if you can get contact. You could also try borrowing a power supply if you know someone with the same machine to isolate the problem.

Nc6000 multibay battery does not recharge

Perhaps remove the multi-bay battery, and let main battery charge all the way. Then reattach multi-bay battery, and see if it's recognized.
(Will charge)

That is AC adapter (Charger) removed, then remove multi-bay battery.
Plug AC adapter back into laptop, THEN plug AC adapter into power.

[You do Not want to unplug an AC adapter from a laptop, with the AC adapter plugged into power. Could be a power surge/voltage spike. Unplug AC adapter from power, when plugging into laptop, or unplugging from laptop ]

Main battery charged, unplug power to AC adapter, unplug AC adapter from laptop. Plug multi-bay battery in, then AC adapter.
(Then plug AC adapter into power)

NEW Battery not properly charging

Batteries have electronics data that software has to get to properly charge it. Newer lithium batteries maybe different. But apparently, you have a work around for a lengthy use of the new battery.

Hi, it seem as if your battery is faulty you should try another battery to see if the computer will recognize when it is charging, you can also try your battery in another compaq presario computer to see if it will have the same problem.

Whenever i plug my charger in, a message is displayed saying the power type cannot be determined and the computer will not charge.

I had the exact same problem (Vostro 1500), the short story is the computer is dead and I'm looking at replacing the motherboard. Here's the long story: Whenever I got the error message, I'd fiddle with the connection at the back of the computer, and "reset" the power adapter (see below for my reset procedure). That worked for a while until last week--the computer refused to recognize the power adapter, and my little trick wouldn't work. I have no means for charging the battery, so now the whole system is dead in the water. I've determined the problem is not the adapter itself, as it works fine in another similar unit I own. It's definitely the computer's power port or some internal component related to it. Lo and behold, a bit of searching on the internet has revealed that this is a common flaw with Dell Inspiron 1500 series, and Vostro is a close relative of the Inspiron. I'm going out on a limb and assuming it's the "Inspiron Affliction." Anyway, every solution I've found recommends replacing the motherboard, because the power port is integrated with said board. $225-$300 is the going price. I'd just use a dock, but Vostro doesn't accomodate a dock, so that option is out :-/

Dell Power Adapter Reset: If your power adapter has an indicator light, does it refuse to glow when plugged in? To "reset" it, unplug the adapter from the wall and computer, then unplug the cord where it connects to the transformer brick. Plug it back into the brick, then plug it into the wall but not the computer. If the indicator light doesn't glow, then something is wrong with the adapter. But if the light glows, then your adapter is good. The next step is to plug it into the computer, if the indicator light stays on, you should be OK for now (although it will probably fail permanently sometime soon). On the other hand, if the indicator light flashes briefly and goes out, the problem is in the computer -- back up your files while you still have battery power! Either way, if your computer is still in warranty, I recommend extending it another two or three years, if that's an option.

Burning smell on my laptop

Unless you have the ability to to replace the plug connector part yourself, you will have to take it in to a shop who can do that kind of fine soldering for you. If nothing else is damaged, it should be ok with replacing just that burnt out part.
