Question about Craftsman 16" High Garden Tractor Snow and Dozer Blade

Open Question

I hope someone can help me. I have a Craftsman 5/22 snowblower, pretty old but still in great working order. We just got hit here in NJ with 2 ft of snow. Worked fine for 4 houses I helped, including mine (Thanks God). But all of a sudden the the auger wouldn't engage. I checked the belts and noticed that the auger belt was worn and thought that was the culprit. I was able to change out the belt, but now the auger vibrates and makes a loud clanging noise and I have to immediately stop the engine. When I have the auger engaged and the blower tilted back, the vibrating lowers a little but once I release slowly the vibrating and noise starts. I took the unit apart and was able to spin the impeller and the auger smoothly. So I am very confused? Is it an adjustment? Did I not install the belt correctly, does it need an adjustment? When the blower is not engaged the auger pulley i assume is still spinning, but the belt should not turn because it is not engaged. Correct. Also the impeller pulley should not be spinning either when not engaged. When idling everything seems to rattle, when I engage it seems to spin fine. I have adjusted the belt guides, but that didnt help. Could the spring that engages the brake on the pulley be the cause ?

SOURCE: Craftsman 20HP , can't stop freewheeling,

Sounds like your problem is the key in your rear wheel is missing or sheared, you have to remove the wheel @ tire assembly ,pull rubber cap off then clip to remove if one of the keys is sheared or gone it will go into gear and the brake will work ,but they will only stop the shaft without the key it will not move or brake becuase its not attached if you know what I mean.

SOURCE: BLADE DRIVE BELT ADJUSTMENT

Well, most riding mowers have a "pully idler", meaning once you have the belt on there (and it is the RIGHT size), the idler automatically gives the belt tension when you engage it (in fact, the idler pully is what IS engaged when you engage the belly mower).

Couple things to check (super simple):

The Belt. Look to see if she is wore smooth out.
Sometimes....they WILL stretch on you, instead of busting/coming apart, and give you noise (when she is engaged, but wore out enough to flop around a little)

The Deck Blade Bearings. Straight away, that is what it sounds like, or bent blades.

Check your Blade Bearings (super simple):
1. Pick up your deck to the highest high setting (mower off, just sitting).
2. Reach under, and grab your mower blade (do this for both sides), and TILT your blade UP (meaning, don't LIFT the blade straight up).
Seriously, jiggle it at a TILT. If you feel some slack in the bearing, the bearing IS shot. Straight up and down is most of the time OK, IF it is VERY little play on your blade bearings. As you do it, look at your belt pulley directly on top, if you see that pully bobbing....

However, if you grab one side of the blade only, then tilt the blade up, and she moves.....
Bearings need replaced, both the upper AND lower bearings PER blade.

They are not hard to replace, and not expensive either! (Though unfortunately, most are "sealed" junk nowadays!)

Bad Bearings show up (make themselves known) in only a few ways: Tons of Noise (grinding, squealing) & Vibration.

Go check them thar Bearings!

get down and gun your fingers in the slot that the belt rides in, soulds like you may have a small rock or piece of wood lodged in the v part of one of the pulleys. I bet thats it Jim

The best way to find a repair center area you is to call Delonghi Customer Service 800-322-3848. Ironically, their USA operation is also located in NJ.

Hope this helped you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

How to remove mower deck & put on snow blower model # 917.289101

Here is the operator's manual for your mower. http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/owner_manuals/14328/CRAFTSMAN-Lawn-Tractor-L0911505?brand_name_search=917.289101
Page 22-24 shows you how to remove the mower. You will need the manual for the snowblower to mount it to the tractor.
If you don't have the manual for the snowblower go to managemylife.com. Under the manuals tab put in the model number of the snowblower (you will find it on the snowblower and it looks like 123.123456)
You can view, download, and print the manual there.
It is a pretty big job. It will take you about 5 minutes to remove the mower and about 3 hours to mount the snowblower.
Let me know what other questions you may have.

How can I keep my 2 stage snowblower in high?

I will assume you are referring to the 2 stages in the front of the machine. The spiral auger rakes are the first stage, they are designed to collect the snow and feed it to the impeller. The impeller is the 2nd stage and is to throw the snow up the chute. The lower rakes in the front do nopt throw snow only collect it.

Snowblower drive will stop unexpectly when snowblowing

Mine was doing the same thing and I found that if I put it in reverse for a little while it would be ok again for a short time. I found also that it did this more often when the snow was heavy and wet which makes me think that the rubber drive wheel is getting wet and slipping. If you've brought it in to a shop and they've said that nothing could be found wrong, then it must be something that goes away by the time you get it there - water (I'm guessing).
