Question about Acer Computers & Internet

1 Answer

My Acer x191w takes 25 minutes to turn on in the morning. It starts to work for a half second then goes black and the power button goes back and for from green to orange. It does this for 25 to 30 mins and then turns on and my desktop is real dim for about a minute or 2 then the screen works fine the rest of the day. Any idea which component is causing this?

Sorry, I forgot to say this is just a monitor for a desktop not a laptop computer.

Power related issue certainly, sounds as though the charger may be suspect, but I'd need to know if you were running this on battery also.

The dimming of the screen could be down to a faulty backlight, but I have a feeling thet, given the issues you also decribe, that there is a problem with some of the capacitors on the motherboard, which are causing the power fluctuation. This is not good news if it is the case, as it means the motherboard needs to come out and be checked and maybe have new capacitors.

It could also man that there is a damaged or "dry joint" on one of the circuits that provide power to the laptop

Ah! I answered the wrong post....apologies!
Right in this case I'm fairly confident that the issue is a little similar anyway. The power capacitors that send the voltage through the inverter to the screen have a tendency to fail with age. I think what you are seeing here is a "lazy" capacitor which is not charging up fully, or charging slowly. I would guess that were you to remove the screen back cover, you would find a capacitor that is bulging at the sides or the top

Ok thanks for your help. So would I just have to replace the bulging capacitor or is there a set of them that I should replace? Also can I buy the capacitor at radio shack or do I need to get them from a computer store or special order them?

Having had the experience of a capacitor from a studio flash go off in my face, I'd leave this to the experts. I think that you only need replace the one thats bulging, but.. at the very least get a technician to check it out. Rado shack is like Maplins over here ( probably better) so you should get them thsere

With kindle you hold down the on/off switch for 25-30 seconds and it will go into a reset mode. flashes and goes black but comes back with the usual "loading" bar. takes a few minutes to work it's way back to the start screen. This may also work for Ipad.

hi

try rebooting the system (i think its F8, to get to SAFEMODE) . in DESKTOP , right click and go to PROPERTIES, go to SETTINGS, go SCREEN RESOLUTION and take the arrow to the left ; set to 640x800 and and take the color setting to 256 drop down . hopefully this works after rebooting the system. if it doesnt, it may sound like the inverter card may be bad (PC bourd that connectes to the screen : this requires a service technician)

good luck !

Acer monitor AL1706 Power On problem

You are more likely to have bad capacitors problem in the power supply, inverter circuits. I would look for bad caps first. Look at some of the sample here: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums

Here's some ideas to try. Try them in order and see each one goes. I tried to start with easiest...

  • With it powered up use the key combination to switch between external monitor and built-in display. At least on my Acer it's Fn+F5. The icon looks kind of like an empty square next to a filled in square separated by a vertical line.
  • Hold down power button for ~8 seconds until it turns off then wait about 10 seconds and power it back on and give it a second to see if it will come back to life.
  • With the machine powered off remove the battery. Leave it out for for at least 10 minutes (longer the better actually) then put it back in. Power on machine and see what happens.
  • If the battery removal above didn't work take out the battery again and try re-seating the memory and/or hard drive and/or optical drive (but not at the same time)

So the guy on the phone says there is one thing that we can do before sending it in. Unplug it completely for the wall and computer. Hold the on/off button in for 30 secs. reconnect power and the computer. It worked for me

It takes 5 to 7 minutes to turn on my Magnavox HD TV

IFyou feel confident and can locate switch mode power supply with back removed.
Try warming switchmode power supply before turning TV on.
If TV turns on normaly then there are some small capcitors that are a common cause of this fault.
Otherwise look for DRY or CRACKED solder jointson PCB
BUT DON'T do any of the above if your are not confident send it to a TV repaiman.
