Question about Dell Inspiron 6000 Notebook

1 Answer

I installed two new 1 gigabyte memory sticks into a Dell Inspiron 6000, which previously only had 2 256 megabyte memory sticks installed. When I first installed the 2 gigs of new memory, the laptop turned on, the system recognized the new memory, but Windows got stuck on the "Starting Windows" screen (I have Windows 7 installed). I let it sit for awhile, and it just never got past the "Starting Windows" screen. I took out 1 of the new 1 gig memory sticks, so it only had 1 new 1 gig memory stick installed, and the computer started up fine and recognized the 1 gig of memory. I installed the 2nd new memory stick, and got the same problem again - it just got stuck on "Starting Windows". I switched around the new memory sticks and booted it up with the other new memory stick, and it worked fine, so I know it's not a faulty memory stick. Any idea what could be causing Windows to hang on "Starting Windows" with the 2 gigs of new memory installed? Thank you!

Once you installed the memory, did you enter into the System BIOS Setup screen? Do this and verify that the system recognizes the newly installed 2GB RAM. This should let the system access the new memory once you boot.

1. First thing to try (least expensive) is to REMOVE the memory stick or sticks and RESEAT them back into their respective slots. Boot up the laptop and check for results.

2. If this does NOT work, remove them again, clean the copper ends with CLEAN pencil eraser.
RESEAT them and check results.

3. Purchase replacement memory sticks/modules.

NOTE: Turn-off your laptop AND unplug A/C adapter. Be careful removing these modules. Touch each module at the corners.

Please advise of results.

I just installed RAM into my dell inspirion 6000 and had the caps lock and mum lock lights flash then the computer shuts off. I read the manual and I did install the RAM properly (removing the battery...

Please provide everything on the sticker of the memory. When you bought the RAM, was it a pair or did you buy individual sticks? Your system can only support a maximum of 2 GB of PC5300 DDR2 RAM, split over two 1 GB sticks of RAM per slot. If you have tried exceeding this, it will not work, and even if it were to, it would eventually cause irreparable damage to your system.

Good Luck,

I have a inspiron 6000 what kind of hard drive do i need?

From what i have read it is an IDE hard drive and any size shouls work. I would take drive out to be sure and stick to a 120 GIG or 160 GIG. That way it should be recognized without having to do a complicated bios flash. Good Luck

My inspiron 6000 will not start up after I changed the memory

This is normally due to the memory stick not be properly seated in the slot. Redo steps for memory install.

You can also pick up the batteries less expensive than most computer places at batteries plus. And yes it sounds as though it is the batteries charge is getting low, especially if it runs fine when the battery is out and you have it plugged in.
