The simplest problem would be the failure of the backlight.

In case you don't already know it, there is one, and they may or may not last forever.
Also, there is an extra power supply to produce the high voltage the lamp needs to fire that may have failed.

Sometimes, you can look at the screen from an angle to see if there is any sign of movement.
If you can see program material causing a change in the faint image, then you can be pretty sure it is one of the two problems mentioned.

SOURCE: Westinghouse LTV-20V4 turning on PROBLEM

This problem is with fair certainty the power supply.
Modern power supplies are designed to shut down if the current drawn exceeds the design level which indicates that something the supply services or the supply itself has died.

If you are adventurous, you might pull the plug on the set, allow the set to sit overnight, gain access to the innards, and with good light, inspect any boards inside. If you see one that has few ICs but many more larger discrete parts, this will be the power supply.
You are looking for components called electrolytic capacitors that are almost always cylindrical and mostly installed upright at 90 degrees to the board with leads passing through to the solder side.
This same type of component in smaller dimensions is still used in a horizontal package with leads bent down and passing though holes to the solder side.
The latter are becoming more rare since they don't lend themselves well to robot assembly.
Many (not all) will show signs of pregnancy when they fail, bulging unnaturally when compared with others. Now and then, there may be traces of a crystalline deposit around the end where the seal failed from internal pressure.

These will have values listed on them in uFd & VDC and sometimes, a plus/minus number lying about the precision.
Some also have a date code (rarer) that will look like four digits:

2403 = 24th week of 2003

Most electronics suppliers have a stock of the various values but if they have a date code at all, try to get only those made before 2002 or after 2006.

The larger caps will probably be OK since the failure is likely related to functions other than brute-force filtering. A pretty good 'rule of thumb' is to replace any caps you see bulging that are 100 uFd or less.

If you choose to replace these yourself, you will need a quality soldering iron with a small, preferably iron-plated tip, rosin core solder and a sponge which when wetted is used to frequently wipe oxidized solder from the tip this should be kept bright and clean and fresh tinning will keep it that way.

You should also buy some solder 'wick' with the iron; this is used to place on the solder you wish to remove and then heated with the iron. Properly used. the wick will absorb nearly all of the solder from the lands from which you wish to remove a component.

SOURCE: I need a remote code for a westinghouse LCD TV,

Hello, if the remote is a universal remote you will most likely need to input the Sony codes. Another option is to purchase an original remote at parts@wde.com, the price for the remote is $15 plus $5 shipping and handling.

What is the universal remote code for a Westinghouse LTV-19w6?

You can try code 0463, although its a long shot.

Alternativley....this may work (a manual code search):

Turn on the device that you want to control. (TV)
Then press that device key on your remote once and release (the TV key as an example).
Press device key a second time and hold for at least 3 seconds, and release.

Hopefully, the device key is now flashing. Next, start pressing channel up repeatedly until the device you are trying to control turns off. When this happens, press the device key, this will lock in the code.

Note: When the device shuts off, you may have hit channel up before your brain realizes what happened (i.e. you will be one code off...so hit channel down and then the device key if you think you went to far)

Hope this helps!

I have a line in the middle of my screen.what can I replace to fix this?

To be honest, you're not going to like this but... the simple answer is to replace the TV. You've got a short on the circuit board that controls the LCD display. You could replace the board, but for a 20" TV it's actually cheaper to buy a whole new TV. Hope it's under warranty!

Westinghouse ltv 32w The power shuts off by

I had a similar problem with my Phillips 42 in. LCD HD TV.

Here's the problem. The Power Supply Board. I opened my TV up(warranty was up of course) and found several bad capacitors. Phillips and several other companies were sold capacitors that although were highly rated failed within 5 years because of a lack of preservatives. All sorts of electronic equipment is now being effected due to these defective capacitors.
Solutions?
1. Take it in and have it fixed
2. Open it up, check the board for faulty capacitors(bulged or leaking) Buy a new Power supply board and install it.
3. Remove PSB, remove faulty capacitors and replace with compatible new ones.

Hope this helps

I have sound but no picture a all on a Westinghouse LTV20v4. The menu does not come up.

Check for bad capacitors in the inverter board, it may have taken out the 8 transistors when the caps went open.

I had this problem with these tv`s. The problem actually lies with the power supply inside the unit. Some of the units i`ve seen have 2 blown capacitors on the power supply (C7 and C6) replacing these works. On others, the capacitors as well as a few transistors (Q8 - Q1) are blown. But on all the sets i have seen with this problem, changing the above components restores full functionality to the system.

Westinghouse LTV-32w4 HDC - adjustment buttons unresponsive, volume drop, etc.

plug your cable connection to a vcr "in" then run a seperate cable cord from the vcr "out" to your television (which should be on channel 3 or 4) depending on your vcr setting and use the vcr to control the channel so when your westinghouse freezes and becomes unresponsive you could still change the channel and so on through your vcr and tv acts like a monitor works for me. N.B be sure to set the volume and so on before it freezes which could be like a 1min window from turning your tv on
