Most printers will tell you via the software that came with the unit. Open the user interface and look for a 'maintenance' tab or button.

Why do i get thick black line(stripe) when scanning and copying with the hp 4315

Sounds as if you have dirty drive path for the paper. Printers are bad about ink leaking (especially if not used often) and cleaning well involves some disassembly. The ink is very messy so wear rubber gloves. Clean around print cartridges, rollers, and also the glass for scans.

How to reset the ink level of my hp officejet 6500

Checking ink levelsUse one of the following methods to check the ink levels. Method one: Check the ink levels from the HP All-in-One The ink level is displayed on the main screen of the control panel display. Locate the two icons that represent the print cartridges. The icon on the left is for the color cartridge and the icon on the right is for the black cartridge.
  • The exclamation mark (! ) symbol indicates a low ink level.
  • The question mark (? ) symbol indicates the product cannot determine the status of the print cartridge. This might be because the cartridge is refilled.

How do I set up to print from the black cartridge. All I can get it to use is the color cartridge for the HP 4315

You can't set this up, it's done automatically by the printer depending on what you want printed.
Check the level of the black ink and print a text file directly from windows - don't use any HP soft.

Please clean the copper contacts of the cartridges with dry cloth and then check the expiry date and ink level present in the cartridges.

If the cartridges are expired or out of ink, replace the cartridges and check for the result.

If the cartridges are not expired and not out of ink then insert the cartridges and check for the results, if the issue persists recycle the printer and then reset the printer.
