I have the exact same problem. I completely removed the thread already, so I know it's not that. The needle is in the down position through a pair of jeans (I can see the point of it under neath) and the knob will only turn a tiny bit in either direction. No idea what to do....

There is not even any thread in the machine. I've taken the bobbin casing out, looked for thread....there is nothing there. The handwheel just will not turn either forward or backward. It only moves a little each way. I hate it. THis is the third time I have even used the machine and I am TOTALLY irritated.

Pull the thread through the tension assembly and test it to make sure the tension is working correctly.
(To do this test, adjust your tension setting to normal or medium or 5 or something in the middle. Raise the presser foot and pull the thread through the tension. It should pull easily!! Lower the presser foot and pull the thread. It should pull noticeably harder.) If it passes this test, continue up through the take up lever, then down through the thread guides to the needle.
If it passes this test you need to remove the bobbin case and check for burrs or rough spots. If you find any ,use an emery stick to remove them and then buff the area with fine steel wool.Put the bobbin case back in ,check your bobbin(change it ) and try again by turning the handwheel slowly and watching to see where the thread is snagging

The center of the hand wheel looks like it should be able to be pressed inward to lock needle while winding bobbin; won't budge but will spin...

Rae,

If you are trying to wind a bobbin or resume sewing, the center knob across many models of machines; is to TURN the center hub to lock or unlock the needle bar sewing action so you can wind a bobbin; or resume sewing.

Pressure foot pressure control

The pressure foot knob had some problems. on this model. The solution was to remove the covers and the e clip that holds the knob in place. I install a belleville spring washer on the knobs shaft. This extra tension keeps the knob from turning when the sewing machine vibrates. This may be more difficult than most consumers want to attempt.

Needle does not move when I try to sew.

On these old singers, there is a locking washer that controls the tighten and release mechanism. If it is not in the proper place your efforts to tighten and loosen to engage the sewing functions do nothing.

I cannot loosen stop motion knob so that I can wind a bobbin.

Sometimes the knob locks so tight it requires a good strong beefy man to loosen it. Turn it counter clockwise!! You can also wind without loosening the knob, just MAKE SURE to unthread the machine and to sew for winding only. It works for all industrial machines, without loosening the knob.

The thread and bobbin are nesting up in the bobbin case

Two things I have found that make my singer ce-200 nest. 1st. When I change threads, sometimes I thread it wrong - always nests when I do that. 2nd. When the bobbin runs out of thread it always nests for me, so I have to check the bobbin often. And I remembered a 3rd thing. 3rd. The area for the bobbin & bobbin casing has to be clean, no pieces of threads, and the bobbin casing itself can move, so make sure it's seated correctly.Whenever I get nesting, I take the metal cover off, under the needle, to get in and clean the bobbin area and under the needle good, before I go back to embroidering.

Handwheel on Sewing machine no longer moves needle.

Actually you should have a "set screw" in the hand wheel. The set screw is usally locked down tight to keep the hand wheel from spinning freely. I f you can run the machine slowly and hold the hand wheel in one place but the machine continues running, then you do need to replace the "set screw". If you replace it you will find that you can offset some of the machines vibration by where you lock the wheel down. Trial and error is the only way to achive this adjustment, kind of like balancing the tires on your car.

The knob on wheel stuck.

Remove the needle, and place a screwdriver or something like it under the needle bar to keep the wheel from turning.
Wrap the knob in some type of fabric to keep it from being marred.
Using channel locks or water pump pliers, grasp the knob and turn it to the left. It should come loose. Once it is loosened, try it 2 or 3 times to make sure it works as it should.
Wind the bobbin, insert a new needle and have fun again.

Stop Motion Knob

Dear Jim,
I'm sure you have a pair of Channel lock pliers around.Place a fairly thick piece of fabric around the inner knob to keep from scratching it. Grasp it with the pliers while holding the handwheel and turn it to the left. IF you can't hold the wheel to keep it from slipping, place a screwdriver or something else under the needle set screw area, turn the wheel until the set screw is resting against the set screw and then turn the inner knob with the pliers.
